Using a Moog Sub 37 Filter as an external audio effect in ableton

Hey peeps,

Is is possible to do this?
And if so how?

Iv tried watching similar videos on the Moog minitaur for effects processing.

Audio interface; steinberg UR44.

Iv tried a few routing options hardware wise and software wise ( abletons external audio effect rack )

So far iv tried taking audio line out into line in on the moog sub 37 then back out and into the line in on the sound card.

Inside ableton is where I don’t understand how to do it. I can get the moog to play no worries but I just want to use the filter. I tried the cv gate thing and not the continuous midi not one.

I’m just trying to use the filter on an Audio track.

I’m having trouble understanding gearslutz website so ima post here also, cause this place is awesome and intuitive. :love_you_gesture:t2:

That’s how you do it. Audio input should be correct, the other inputs on the Sub37 are for cv. On some synths (or actually most synths) you have to open the amp in order to hear the audio input (press key or use sequencer with a long continous note, amp env with sustain up ofc)

Check in the software mixer of your UR44 if the output is turned down.

Do you see level going out in Abletons external audio effect device (there are level meters for out and in plus two gain dials)?
If level is going out, something on the Sub37 has to be changed.

Your audio routing seems to be okay.

Could it be that your filter or amplitude envelopes on the synth are not set-up as you need? Do you want the synths envelopes to control something at all?

If I would apply a filter on audio for sound design, I would set the modulation amount of the filter envelope to zero and the envelope of the VCA to “gate-open” =“LATCH-ON” button to “on”.

Don’t forget to turn the VCOs off, and the EXT Audio input on.
Then just send the Sub 37 audio to a channel in your ableton set. No need for the external audio plugin.

External Audio Device and External Instrument Device are latency compensated and allow for realtime rendering.
If you have a compressor or a reverb or smt like that which does not need any knob tweaking/automation, you do not have to record the audio into a track, Live will render the effect with the arrangement ofc it takes some time, because it’s rendered in realtime).

But, yeah, sending audio from Live to a synth for filtering does not need the external audio device.

Two audio tracks (one sends audio to Sub37, one receives the audio from Sub37, use drop down menu ‘audio to…’ and ‘audio from…’) will do.

Been thinking of doing this and that’s exactly what you need to do… make sure

Open that amp, get the key note pressed continuously, turn off all oscillators and your golden, my friend… golden

I guess we could trigger the filter envelope by sending MIDI notes to the synth, right? Or use it with Sync and/or loop modes for polyrhythm greatness (which I love on the Sub37!), or also use the LFO, synced or not, to modulate the filter, or an oscillator to modulate the filter…

I never thought of all of these for external treatment but that sounds like fun!

Gave it a red hot go. Still nothing. Tried a few different “oh well why not” clicks n synth tricks. I’m definitely just missing something obvious. Anyone care to video call me and run me through it?:pray:t2:

Could you please explain, what you want to achieve in more detail?

Use of the filter on audio should be not a problem …

Maybe you should try this to identify the technical problem:

On the synth I would open the gate of the VCA, there is no trigger or external gate necessary to do this, set the modulation depth of the filter envelope to zero, send some audio to the external-in, check the input-level of the audio in the mixer section, play manually with the cut-off knob, and that’s it … for a very basic case of cause. The signal should be at the main and headphones.

If this works, you can switch to Ableton. Send audio to the synth and check the return signal. If the return signal is received, you can control the filter cut-off of the Sub 37 with CC19.

One tip I’d give is routing another synth into the moog and using that as another layer that goes into the filter. Then play with the pitchwheel or something on only one of the synths. It’s like having a pimped moog. I have gotten some really fat sounds off of this with my sub phatty.
