What are the snare possibilities?

Hey guys,

since I’m trying to get a clear thought regarding what all my GAS really is about (and being a snare sound fetishist) I’d love to hear, what the Analog Rytm snare machines are capable of!
Can you record me a few seconds of snare-machinery with some tweaking involved? As I know, there are a few snare types with tweakable parameters. I’d love to know the range of these.

Thanks in advance!

If you are a snare fetishist, I’m not sure what to tell you… IME the snare engine is not the snappiest one in the world (might even go as far as to say I like the SD engine the least). However, there is some scope, and also the FM SD machine which can be useful in certain situations. For a snare fetish, perhaps the most interesting options open up with using samples and layering a sample with some machine (not necessarily even an SD machine) for extra thickness, movement etc. The onboard verb (with usable predelay and filtering params) and delay are automatable so if you like to use FX for shaping the overall feel of your snares, it is also one aspect to factor into the equation…

FWIW, I find snares to be very tricky to do “right” with any machine… A transient on a snare is a bitch to recreate in a satisfying way.

Good snares often have more than one layer. The 909 snare (i think) was created by layering 2 noise sources. You could probably use another voice with white noise on the rytm applying different filter settings to add some thickness or snappiness or whatever.

Yep i tend to layer the snare and the clap engine to get results i like. The snare engine alone sounds pretty weak in my opinion.

If I was a snare fetishist (kind of am) I wouldn’t be looking at an analog machine. Digital machines like the MD and NordDrum can do snares way better and are way more versatile. IMO.
The Rytm is a very versatile sound machine but I don’t personally consider it to be a versatile drum machine. The sample playback certainly helps but for snares I think you can do better for cheaper.
The MD is the swiss army knife of drum machines.
