What's a good mixer?

so, i feel like using just the four inputs of the OT isn’t going to work for me. my setup is currently OT, A4 (might replace with something if the update doesnt convince me to keep it), TT-303, jomox airbase, and tempest. of course the tempest has 6 outs and the jomox has outs for every drum sound and i dont want to have all the drums coming out one channel so i can process individually and adjust levels.

how many channels do you think i would need? because i think i will still be using all the inputs on the OT and then i’d use all the outs on a mixer.

what do you think of mixers with built in effects? useful? i’m not really sure they would be that great for production and i’m trying to only use a daw for some final compression.

what mixers are you guys using in your setups? whats something i can send some external effects like a stompbox? (sorry i’ve really never used one before) i got an audio interface so i dont need something that has usb for recording

Probably best to avoid built in FX, often they are very rudimentary and don’t sound great, but as well as this if they go faulty then they can cause problems, I had a soundcraft mixer where this happened, and it took a while to track down the nature of the fault (a random popping) which turned out to be a crapped out fx DSP.

Then it depends if you want stuff like EQ, mic pres etc. If not the a summing mixer might be the way to go, Speck, Rane, Ashley are all pretty good.

If you want more of a general purpose mixer Mackie, Allen&Heath, Yamaha, all have reasonable offerings.

Or you could take a chance and go for a vintage mixer, can be a bit of a gamble, but if it pays off then you can get some mojo and great features/sound depending on budget, probably looking at at least 300 for anything half decent.

I picked up one of these recently

samson sm-10
nothing fancy, but v. compact (half a rack deep) & good value for money imho if you are going for a really basic static set-up (set your dials and forget about it). Nice feature is every track has a mute button.
depends on whether you really want faders or not. I just wanted to mix down to 2 tracks and be able to blend in a degree of fx loop on every track as needed, moreso to mix multiple machines as a patch bay, with main outs going back into the OT.

For me a mixer with at least 4 aux send is very usefull when you have machine with input… so you can send one machine or more sources to the input of 2 or 3 machine…
