White noise when using gain from the compressor

Hello Eletronauts,

My brand new MKII rytm makes noise sounds when i use the gain control to compensate te compressor. Even when I just use it slightly. Is this normal? I have it on the main outs but also on the headphone outs. I’ve tried multiple cables/speakers/headphones so this could not be te problem.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

Makeup gain after compression automatically increases noise, because you first reduce the dynamic range and then make everything louder.

the noise floor of the analogue circuits and filters is raw!

welcome to rytm land

Thanks for your response. Is it normal that it’s also there when no sound is playing and the sequens is on full stop?

Don’t remember having it so much with the mkI

I’m new to the AR. Had mine just a few weeks and don’t have that much time to play it. I’m trying out a lot of ideas and techniques when I come across them in the forum. I just tried this now… it’s defo noisy!

Whether it’s more or less than the mk1 I can’t say. It seems noisier than my TLA Ivory2. Smashing some drums through it whilst it’s set that “noisy” sounds nice and crashy tho’. I can see I’ll have to be a bit careful with it to get the best out of Maybe strong compression with a lot of make-up will be better sampled by another device, or recorded and trimmed, but for the pleasing noise when the drums actually play, I can live with this.

turning down amp decay from INF to something lower on all tracks makes a big difference for me. also trying to make a habit of keeping all the track volumes higher so i can keep the master lower helps. and of course being mindful of compressor settings especially make-up gain. all of this brings the noise down to essentially unnoticeable level for me

I think I have this right:

Track sound level + (sample amplitude > sample level) > velocity > VCA volume > track volume > distortion > (compressor reduction > make-up > vol) > main volume

That’s 9 gain stages!

Yes it’s normal since the audio signal goes through the analogue circuitry even when nothings playing. Kinda like with every other analogue gear (exceptions for bypassing options etc.). Similar to when people run stuff through old compressors or mixers without really using the features in order to color the signal.

Hey there.

I had a kind of similar issue with noise but didn’t know where it came from as there are, as mentioned, a lot of gain stages.
Turned out my source/VCO levels and main level were too low (because of thoughtless mixing) so I had to crank up the make up gain which caused noise.
Got it solved by having the main volume at around 3 o’clock, source/VCO levels to 100, setting threshold higher and having less make up gain. Even with post AR compression and pushing the mix out to 0 dB in ableton, noise level is really good!
