Yep would need to be built from ground up on dedicated hardware with abstracting software framework.
Just well defined interfaces, together with an example implementation for each module.
Lets call it “digital” modular system 
This will be the future for digital instruments!
The vast majority of open source projects are an unusable mess, in my experience.

I wish that Elektron re-write the track effects algorithms and drop the ‘old’ ones.
Also the timestretch algorithm could be little bit better.
