I would love to see a mode on the A4 that emulates a true step sequencer. Something like enter step sequencer mode, play a note (via midi or on board keyboard) and automatically advance the trig to the next trig and play another note advance trig, etc. is this possible?
It is theoretically possible. The MM does it, using [REC] + {STOP] to begin recording.
Why donāt you ask Elektron via a support ticket to implement it?
Then you need to assign a button to skip a step. Iām not convinced itās any easier than holding the trig and playing the note. Next trig, next note. Skip a trig, next note.
Yes maybe something like a pressing on the active trig with no midi note inserts a rest and advances to the next trig would work for me. The way it works now just seems counter intuitive to me sometimes, seems like too many button presses to enter a 16 step sequence or the like. I like the record + stop idea to implement this.

Done - ticket entered !
Actually you could reassign the Mute which always seemed a waste of time to me. The way trigs work now - i.e. you set up notes on each step but if you then remove the trig, your work is lost - doesnāt seem the best approach. Actually seems left over from drum machine mentality when I come to think about it, where a single default note might have some validity.
Hereās a thought: Why not remember the note value when you remove the trig? So if you add the trig again, the value you entered is still there. Like other step sequencers do. Keep the default note for steps youāve never worked on. And if you really want to clear the step, hey look, thereās a āclearā function.
That would be lovely !

Iām into this idea.
My cat has a habit of walking on and therefore deleting newly formed melodies and plocks.

It doesnāt matter so much to me these days as I use my A4 mainly as module, driven by an external sequencer. It comes alive in ways I never found possible with A4ās own.
certainly offers an improvement over the current behaviour, particularly if a trig gets removed by accident
Nicely put.
Elektronās entire sequencer paradigm is left over from drum machine (Machinedrum) mentality!
Thatās why I love the MD, OT, and (probably) AR so much more than their synths. (Itās also a design issue for most groovebox-style instruments.)
Iām very interested to see whether their next hardware product will have a different form factor.
(Sorry for straying a bit off-topic.)
It would be interesting to know why only the MM has step sequencing.

LOL
if this is implemetend she can write sequences for you

God yes. I usually try to stay on topic but Iāve never heard this put so well or hear anyone else really complain about it. This behavior stifles experimentation and leads to lost work when you think you are doing one thing but youāre in the wrong mode and delete your steps.
There is a track save but itās temporary. Why oh why is it temporary?
Iāve owned every machine and let them go except the a4 because of how counter productive this behavior is. Even drum machines let you revert to saved.
ādumpedā great features
sid mode arp> mnm,
p-lock arp> ot
mix lfo>md
none are on the later machines, and im sure there are more
to me, it makes elektron seem a little backwards
Ditto!! Plus, it would open up some big performance potential in that you could freely rearrange a full page of trigs into various different melodies by turning trigs on and off. Actually, iām basically describing mute trigs, but this would be a lot faster and more intuitiveā¦ Thereās some measure of anxiety associated with knowing that if you double tap a trig all of its note and plock data is gone.
