I am in the process of getting ready to move my household from Minnesota to the Bay Area in California (cool new job - yay!). We are going to be moving into temporary, furnished, corporate housing for a couple of months while our home in MN is being sold and we are looking for a new house in the Bay Area. Most of my studio will be going into corporate-run storage until we are ready to move into a new house. I want to bring or ship some choice pieces of gear with me to use for those two months, and I decided that the best pieces to bring are my A4 and AR.
I figure that I have a couple of options. One is to box and ship the gear to my temporary address in CA, and the other is to buy one or two serious flight cases and check the gear at the airport on our final trip out. I am thinking about something like Pelican 1500 cases - pricey but worth it in my opinion. I am sort of worried about the cases “walking away” from the baggage claim, though. We have to carry on cats in carriers so I will not be able to juggle all sorts of extra carry-ons.
Hmm… well if anyone has any suggestions for cases - perhaps a single case for both units - would you please let me know? Honestly, while typing this I think I got myself 80% of the way towards the decision to ship separately to my new temporary address, though.
i can’t recommend the pelican 1510 enough, but if you’re only going to be using it once or twice and are worried about the circumstances to boot, i’d just pack them well, insure and and ship them.
The Pelican(s) are great choices. I use them for local shows as well as for traveling to play (which is like once or twice a year). Bought them 10 years ago, they’re still as tough as can be. They all have lock-holes so TSA locks (or stronger) can be added. You can even add a pair of locks.
Mine are the Pelican 1600’s They’re pretty deep. I think that you could actually stack two Elektrons on top of each other in them (I saw . There’s two layers of foam - I’ve only ever plucked out the top layer. You can fit two Elektrons in there. Here’s mine with the Monomachine and a bunch of other things. There’s easily room for another.
So, Pelican cases are a solid investment especially if you’re going to get multiple uses out of them. And I think you could get by with a single 1600. It’s too big for carry-on, but is more than solid enough to handle baggage handlers.
But if you’re only going to do this kind of shipment once, I’d ship. You can track it more easily and insure it more easily. But then again, as checked baggage, at least you have it in your hands quickly.
It appears that TSA locks provide no real security for checked items. I like that 1600 case, but I think that I am going to ship my babies with insurance.
