The Bluebox pairs perfectly with this: DF Audio Minibay (V1 or V2)
I love the desktop patchbay to include all my efx boxes with no hassle.
I posted this in May 22 1010music Bluebox - #788 by Hooked
already ( I own the V1).
The 12 channel config works like a charm with the BB, you just need 6x TRS 6,3 to TRS 3,5 cables to connect the BB to the DF MB and all your gear and efx also go into the DF MB.
Just for anyone wanting to use more external efx units with the Bluebox.
Anyone know if you can have 2 FX loops on the Bluebox whilst retaining the Cue/Phones as the Main Out?
In an ideal world I would like to loop out of Out1 to send to my FX pedals and then Out2 sending to my Polyend Tracker for sampling. I can add the Tracker to the end of the FX chain but would like a little more flexibility.
I thought Iād ask as Iām currently moving things around and donāt have immediate access to my Bluebox atm.
You can yes, I do this but use Out 2 (to a Big Sky) and Cue Send (to an HX Effects) and use Out 1 as the master.
From memory Out 1 is auto-routed as the M Fader destination in the mixer, so I just leave it for that role.
I donāt need/use headphones coming out of my Bluebox btw.
Just a early thought: I currently have a Midas M32R as studio console. I love it for numberous reasons, but it sure take quite a bit of space. Last week, I finally bought the BlueBox mainly for my live setup. And I was surprised I got along with it within minutes.
So I was thinking, what I would replace my Midas with 3 Blue Boxes ? Since I only use synths and noise modules, I donāt really need to equalise a lot on the board. I have enough effect pedals and modules to replace the build in effects on the Midas.
The DAW integration would be a step back, but letās see this only as a first reflection. My Midas is definitely not gone yet.
On paper the BlueBox should be the perfect all in one mixer and recorder for me, but Iāve struggled to gel with it since very first moment I switched it on*
Near the top of the list of the many complaints I have would be the compressor. Do people use the built-in compressor? It seems to have a lot of settings but Iāve used it many times but my mixes come out sounding pretty bad (e.g. big volume jumps or often too quiet) I end up having to fix via a compressor in a software editor or a DAW which is the reason I bought the BlueBox to get away from.
Any tips?
Also I think the product has been abandoned by 1010, the manual hasnāt been updated for years and the firmware is stuck in beta limbo for a similar length of time, with many loose ends unresolved.
*obviously I didnāt āswitch it onā as an on/off switch seems way too much to ask for on a Ā£500 mixer
Iād like to hear what other folks say about the compressor.
We definitely havenāt abandoned the bluebox, although itās a fair concern Iāll take back to the team that we never promoted that beta to a āfinalā release.
Weāre a small team, and weāve also been working on the blackbox 3.0 FW, which is in late beta at this stage and will likely be promoted to a final release soon.
I have a blue box and was initially excited about the compressor but could not find any settings for using it in my liveset which was the primary purpose I had for it. I still like the device and I expect to see developments when you all get around to it so I still recommend it to folks but the compressor is a weak point.
I suggest longtime on the blue box forum eq snapshots scenes.
especially for different section of songs, by selecting different eq snapshots would bring a vibrant workflow than maintain the same eq on each channel.
Yes. But remember itās a āsweetenerā buss effect, itās not an insert effect for controlling transients.
This depends on your level of experience/understanding of buss compression and its application, but my advice would be to make sure you constantly flip the dry/wet blend. Think of the BB comp as a āglueā enhancer, I keep the ratio low-ish, and everything quite subtle, then dip/exaggerate the threshold level to find the ātoo muchā point and dial it back.
I try and set the comp level so that the overall mix volume is approx the same when I have the dry mix at 0 (no comp) and max (100% comp signal), favouring the comp signal to be slightly louder. When Iām happy with that balance, Iāll start at zero on the blend and slowly bring the comp in by ear, finding the point I like.
Then use itās on/off to see the difference. Like I said, itās usually subtle, but itās usually better with it on.
I agree with @CCMP and do exactly the same, you donāt want to be squashing a whole mix like you would an individual track, thatās why you are getting level jumps like for example when your kick drops out.
Ironically, I think the bluebox is very capable as a compressor, since I assume itās the evolved version of the blackbox compressor, which is really nice when you push it. But you have to really push it, so the threshold is quite high.
I got lost in the settings on the bluebox compressor and stopped using it, just because I donāt know enough about compression to actually dial in a valid setting. But Iāve heard the 1010 compressor in action when it works, and itās a really nice one.
the compressor is fine - all Iād like really is some graphics to actually show the Gain reduction etcā¦Iāve been using compressors since the days of purely analogue ones ( mmm Drawmerā¦ ) but even they have some lights to help you along. Obviously youāre using your ears primarily, but a bit of visual feedback to get perfect settings wouldnt go amiss.
Also, in terms of the EQ - would it be possible to have a more traditional modeā¦ I donāt want to be able to change the EQ type of each ānodeā really - often itās very counter intuitive & you can get in a real mess ( especially live ) if you suddently change your 1.2Khz setting to a LPF by mistakeā¦
A standard parametric mode, with HPF / LPF or lo-cut / hi cut at either end & then just adjustable Freq / Gain /Q settings for the nodes would be really great from my point of view - Iāve spent years using EQs set-up like that & the muscle memory is hard to shake !
