What would you guys and girls go for if putting together a 3 piece hardware (synths, drum machines, samplers etc) set up for live and studio use - mixer and effects can be separate if needs be (or maybe part of the set up - ie if using the OT etc).
Setup should major on techno but ideally be versatile. Modular not allowed!
iāve always gotten solid mileage out of an (1) analog (Alpha Juno 1); (2) FM synth (DX-11 back in the day, Digitone Keys currently); and (3) a sampler. ā if you deem that a āsynthā (Emax II originally, Blackbox 1010 now). plus a 303 clone for the acid line (technically two, since i wasnāt totally satisfied with the TD-3ās sound so I added a Cyclone Bass Bot). RD-9 for the drums.
I play with an Analog Rytm, an Octatrack and two effects units. I use the Rytm for drums and basslines and the Octatrack for long drone samples and transitions/master FX.
Preparing for this sort of thing for a live performance in June.
Looking like:
Octatrack
Malekko Manther
either Volca Drum or Digitone
Even the OT and Manther is probably enough for the 30-40mins set - been testing just those two plus Hologram Microcosm and some MIDI control from Launchpad Pro and itās a great time. If I add the Volca Drum or Digitone, itās purely for fun and/or to let the Octa do a little less of the heavy lifting.
At the minute Iām building up a set using just the Syntakt, but the plan is to eventually add my Polivoks and a sampler.
Havenāt decided on the sampler part. Iāve got a Model:Samples at the minute, but I donāt have a computer and would like an easier way of getting samples in, so I might swap it for either a Tracker or even an OT, as the performance mixer and master FX would be very usefulā¦
Actually changed mine to be more specific:
OT
Analog Keys
MC-707
Realistically that would cover all the bases (and bassās) and give a shit ton of flexibility as all 3 can be used as pretty good fx boxes too.
OT for the stems, mangling, sampling, mixing.
AK for analog sounds, that delay, filterbank, keys
MC-707 for drum/dialog samples, all those rompler/roland sounds, fx, additional mixing.
Additionally I think it would be a pretty easy setup to handle, gives good sequencing flexibility, and is pretty hands on. The OT and 707 are compatible wrt samples, the AK with multimap can give a lot of power for both production and performing. 707 has excellent fx, eq, compressors etc.
Edit: Oh and a patchbay and maybe a small mixer for routing.
The Tracker is a really capable sampler, I really enjoy laying out techno spreadsheet-style, and itās got a performance mode thatās aces.
The DB-01 has a very playable sequencer for a bass synth, and wonderful knobs for smoothly evolving sound over time. Just a joy to use and sounds joyous.
For literally anything else the MM2 can fill in. Three osc that go from VA to FM. Unison, detune, and drive that can make it downright analog sounding. Itās bitimbral, so it can do arps while playing chords. It has a fun custom arpeggiator, something like 10-15 mod matrix slots, and is in contention for best reverb Iāve ever heard.
ND2, Minitaur, and then ideally something at least bitimbral, like the MM2. T1 or another external sequencer, and a bluebox. Possibly a multi-effects pedal or two, to add some flexibility for the Nord and the Minotaur.
