Flipping the other thread on its head, which records have great artwork but the music stinks?
I’ll start:
Nearly anything Pen & Pixel ever worked on

Your definition of ace art is clearly very different to mine!
It’s imaginative bordering on surreal. A touch of Magritte to it.
Show us what you think is ace then!
It’s probably because I’m old. Carry on
I will have to think of anything that fits the criteria. I think the problem is I usually overlook album art for good music but not the opposite. I do remember a trip to the thrift shop back in the stone age where you would physically dig through record bins looking for stuff to sample, and I could only really chose based on album art, where I found some really out there covers for really bland music from the 1960’s-70s. Unfortunately I have since divested myself of those relics.
Depending on your taste in classic prog rock, YES album covers are among the best around IMO.
Roger Dean is absolutely brilliant!
He also did most of the box art for Psygnosis Amiga games.
Let’s be real though, the pinnacle of great sleeve containing the musical equivalent of Ross from Friends making Joey cry for just shy of an hour…
I remember being profoundly annoyed when I bought Merzbow’s Pulse Demon after reading a pitchfork review calling it an “incomparable classic” only to realize I had paid for 73 minutes of white noise. But then I figured out how good it was at annoying my friends by sneaking it into the CD carrossel located in the trunk of the car (remember those?) so I came around to actually enjoying it. But 100% I got it for the album art.
So you listened all the way through then…
Seriously though, one of my all time favourite albums/covers.
Also, never listen to Pitchfork, they’re full of shit.
I mean I paid for it! Money was hard to come by back then. Plus I remember I kept thinking that surely there would be a switch up at some point, like the drums would kick in at any moment. Was definitely a right of passage.
yeah, lesson learned
I used to listen to it when I was doing my GCSE and A levels revision.
I did do pretty well, so…
yeah at low volumes it’s actually kind of soothing, like a fuzzy blanket.
Full volume is best, then you get to listen to it forever.
Great, now I’m listening to it again!
Get down to specsavers then.
No
For inspiration here’s another example in a different style:
40 minutes of Zappa ‘playing all the notes’ fretwank. Looks like it should be by a band on Touch and Go.
I just moved to a place where wine is essentially free so I’ll thank you for not confusing me on a weekend night
