AK internal voice always playing regardless of "keyboard dst" settings and "MIDI Ext" button

Hi fellow elektronauts,

What I want to achieve on my AK is pretty basic: without the MIDI Ext button lit, I want to play the analog keys voices from the keyboard and not my other external synth, and with the MIDI Ext button lit, I want to play the other external synth and not the analog keys voices. Reading from the manual, this is also one of the purposes the button is there.

Now, the setting to achieve this would be to go to “keyboard dst” in global -> MIDI config -> port config. However, with all three options “int” / “ext” / “int + ext” ánd with or without the MIDI ext button lit, the analog keys voice plays (either solely or together with the external synth depending on the setting). It just always plays!

I have had this issue before, searched for answers, tried a lot of different settings, but couldn’t get it to work. However, magically and without actually knowing what happened, it started to work as I wanted and life was beautiful for a few weeks. Now, after loading up a new project, I’m back where I started… :frowning:

I would love to understand how I can get it to work the way I want without determining on luck. Anybody an idea what I’m missing? It’s also not a MIDI loopback from Ableton/Overbridge as it still happens when turning off MIDI receive for the voices.

Thank you for your time, it is well appreciated!

I am on the latest firmware by the way!

I was messing up all MIDI settings again and noticed that it works as it supposed to be when in global -> MIDI config -> port config, and setting “output to” to “MIDI” instead of “MIDI + USB”. Probably, there actually is a MIDI loopback from Ableton/Overbridge, but through USB and turning off MIDI receive does not fix this. I am not using much soft synths, so for me this would work for now.

However, this way it is not possible to use the AK as a master keyboard through USB for soft synths without having to manually change this setting all the time, which would be the most ideal situation. Am I still missing something? I’m sticking to MIDI only for now, luckily my soundcard has a MIDI input as well, so I can still play soft synths that way if I want to.

Hi, have you changed the MIDI Ext channel? If it’s still set to Auto then it will clash with the other channel selection stuff within Live, so best to change it (via Func + MIDI Ext menu) to e.g. Ch.16 and then use that channel on all tracks you want to control with MIDI Ext.

Live’s prefs:

Routings:

(the AK OB VST track can be set to ‘All Channels’ rather than ‘Ch.1’ shown in pic)

@garf

Thanks for your reply. I’m grateful to finally understand what’s happening, it was frustrating me silly! Happy it’s not a bug in my unit and an easy fix.

Thanks again, I appreciate it!
