I sent Elektron a support ticket and said I had problems with unreliable pad behavior mute and scene mode, and with track selection. I also sent the serial number, just in case they needed it. They got back to me very fast, asking if I wanted to send it for them to fix, or to just send me the part (a thin film to put between the pads and sensor) and instructions on how to install it.
There’s already another thin film between the pad and sensors, so pay attention to the pictures in the instructions! I didn’t notice I had put the new film in the wrong order, between the existing film and the pads, instead of between the existing film and the sensors. When I opened my rytm, the existing film was stuck to the sensors, but in the instruction pictures they were sitting under the pads instead.
I have now received the new part from Elektron. However I have not had time to fit it yet. Thank you to Eaves for his advice on fitting the new part.
As Eaves said and as I said in my previous post, if you don’t want to do the repair work yourself Elektron will do it for you (and they made that offer even though my AR is out of warranty) but I expect that would cost significant money in terms of shipping costs and also import taxes when the unit ships back to you (I don’t know though, that is only my assumption).
Well I fitted the part that Elektron sent me with no problems at all. I was careful not to over-tighten the bolts (Elektron warn you about this in their instructions) and I also paid attention to fitting the film in the correct place as per Eaves’ helpful advice above. As Eaves points out, the new film needs to sit between the existing film and the sensors and not the existing film and the pads.
You also need to take care to fit the film the right way up. There are 3x tiny metal projections on the device that need to align and then fit through 3x matching tiny holes in the film. Making sure that happens ensures that the film can’t move around when you put the device back together. I don’t think Elektron’s instructions make this part of the job clear enough.
I attach photos with me pointing out where the tiny metal projections are that need aligning with the tiny metal holes.
The machine works perfectly now. I tested the pads thoroughly in mute mode and they are now fine. What a relief. In fact I celebrated just now by…………you guessed it……….removing the screen protector!! LOL
Did this fix actually make your pads more responsive as well? Mine are almost impossiboe to play without fixed velocity… does it make sense to ask elektron for a new film to put on the sensors?
Not sure. My AR is new to me having only very recently bought it (used) and I haven’t used it much at all since getting it. Hence I’m not too sure if there’s much difference between the sensitivity of the pads before and after inserting the new film part. I would say though that I think the responsiveness of the pads feels about right to me (that’s with the film inserted).
It would be relatively easy for you to ask Elektron for the film and then install it yourself so you can test it. It doesn’t take long to install it. If you do that please let us all know what you think.
I’d be interested to know if brand new AR units are now shipped with the extra bit of film already inserted from the factory. Anyone fancy taking their brand new machine apart to have a look??!!
I had the same problem with a black MKII. Was expecting to have a nightmare getting support in Japan, but they have a man in Tokyo who provides support for them.
Fixed the problem quickly.
Regarding pad responsiveness, I don’t understand why it can’t be fixed in software as you can lightly touch pads to enable mutes etc.
In my case, no, it was out of warranty. But Elektron sent the part to me free of charge anyway. They also offered to fix it for me free of charge but that would have incurred shipping fees and possibly import tax assuming they wanted me to ship it to Sweden but they didn’t say where I’d have to ship it.
The fix is so simple to do yourself it is less hassle to actually fix it yourself than ship it back for repair IMHO.
Very clear!
Thanks a lot!
I’m actually still struggling to understand if I should sell my Digitatk for a Analog Rytm or not haha.
I found a nice offer for a second hand Analog Rytm and I think I will (maybe) go for it haha
Yes it would appear to be a design / manufacturing issue. Quite a few people have had the pad mute issue according to this thread. Reading this thread it seems to affect mainly earlier units. However it is easily fixable and Elektron’s support on this matter has been excellent in my own experience. This issue would certainly not stop me buying an Analog Rytm.
The play mode now not that sensitive as before, yes, but I don’t use it at all, but use mute mode always, so for me it was a solution. (but play mode still working anyway)
Also, I was trying to use carton from that box as it is, but it was to thick so I split it by half.
