Can I use Syntakt as a USB MIDI interface for older MIDI gear?

I have a Yamaha SY35 that I am looking to try editing with a free patch editor called Edisyn. I just wondered if it’s common to be able to connect up old MIDI kit through newer gear and their USB connections rather than buy a simple USB>MIDI adaptor?

I have a Syntakt, Prophet 5 rev4, Bastl MIDI Looper and OG Oplab, and I thought something like this might be able to pass through Sysex/patch data, but this is a bit new to me and I’m baffled!

I tried on my Syntakt, but something is crashing/freezing it. Any thoughts?

Better.

Digis don’t send back midi USB data to midi DIN OUT/THRU.

Doesn’t work as a proper midi interface but you can control midi tracks with USB in order to send notes and Control Changes via midi DIN OUT.

thank you!

also, avoid the super cheap USB-MIDI adapters. a lot of the cheapest ones don’t handle SysEx properly. the better super-cheap one is probably the iConnectivity one.

I’ll quote the venerable llamamusic.com:
