I’m taking Doug’s approach to feature requests from now on. Figure out what’s useful and let the dev’s take care of the harsh realities of hardware limitations.
This is the way
I’ve been dreaming of key-trackable LFOs à la A4 for quite some time. This would broaden the tonal palette of the DN immensely.
I see your keytracked LFOs and I raise you a generously populated keytrack submenu on the setup page. Though come to think of it, I needed it most recently for LFO speed+depth so you’re on the money.
SID, SuperWave and DigiPro pls.
Plus a compressor/Limiter on the master fx.
IMO the concept of machines is contrary to the Digitone’s purpose. DN allows you to operate at a lower-level of sound design than any Machine would. Each patch is its own “Machine” already and you have much greater control over the parameters.
But I do think it would be cool to have more control over the initial shape of the oscillators beyond just sine wave or adding harmonics.
regarding physical modelling, personally i think this could be ‘elektronified’ ie made quite simple and logic (thinking out loud):
param 1: bunch of exciters for the kp engine like pluck, strike, bow, noise…
param 2: bunch of ‘materials’ for the decay: string, metal, wind, wood…
param 3: strength
param 4: decay
(optionally param5: some tone controls)
… and you got a pretty good working PM machine. in the end it’s Karplus-Strong, not really rocket science
thinking of it, what would be the absolute dream for me is to have quite simple wavetable + physical modelling machines and be able to combine those inside the FM matrix. throw in fixed frequency operators, damn that would be my perfect elektron digi synth
edit: this would make the DN so hugely unique in synth land imho, only drawback would be more complexity for novice users. but the vast sound possibilities would be so awesome + i think Elektron could market the DN from a much more unique position. some kind of 8 voice digital synth on steroids. now it’s ‘just’ a simplified 4op fm synth with filters (don’t get me wrong i love my DN)
I would have agreed with this until Digitakt 1.50. By taking what was up to now the only mode of the DT and reframing it as the “one shot machine” alongside other new machines, Elektron expanded their definition of what a machine can be.
Digitone’s FM architecture would be the deepest workflow yet to bear the machine label, but it does all make sense in the logic started with Syntakt and extended with DT 1.50.
I’ve also thought that the DN being labelled as a ‘Polyphonic Digital Synthesiser’ leaves the door open for machines to be introduced. Given the way the UI is everything would work the same if a FM machine was swapped out for a Wavetable or Analog Modelling Machine.
Acutally the opposite, since if people have learned one of the “machines”, they already know how to use the other machines
yes but i think that ‘embedding’ new machines in the FM matrix would be pretty daunting for novice users from a sounddesign perspective. it would lead to some extraordinary sound design possibilities, but also risking to lose tonal ‘sweetspots’. personally i think Elektron would not approve this idea regarding KISS (keep it stupid simple), approaching a broad audience thus more sales etc…
anyway i would be already super happy if some wavetable and/or physical modelling machine could exist along the FM engine without the embedding thing
Okay, you win the argument - no new machines for Digitone
goddamn i should have kept my mouth shut
edit: they can exist on the DN without the fm matrix embedding, but please consider the embedding idea @Elektron
ARP over midi would be such a gamechanger! It’s been my number one, personal request since I’ve had my Digitone. Using it as my master sequencer for all my other gear would make this feature so useful. A vote for parameter slides also!
Yes, slides would be awesome! I hope we get it. Sliding chords would probably be very cool. I need to send another email to them now.
Physical modelling , pwm , additional lfo , and midi arp would be awsome also like the new bit rate lowering effect on the digitakt
With new DT update, I also start to believe in DN machines. And in fact, it could be “easy” (from a workflow perspective) to do. The DN has already a soustractive signal path with an FM oscillator (syn 1 & 2 pages), two filters (filter page) and a VCA (amp page). We could imagine this could be now the “FM Machine”, completed by other type of OSC (new “machines”) with parameter settings on syn 1 & 2 pages.
Some examples from my imagination :
- “VA Machine” with 2 or 3 oscillators with PWM, linear FM, ring mod, amp mod, crossmod, etc…
- “Wavetable machine” with two osc, onboard LFOs for scanning, digital FM between osc
- “OPL3 machine”, my personal dream, lo fi and dirty 4 OP FM
- “EXT FM Machine”, the ability to modulate carrier OP with external audio
GLOBAL UNDO please
