Chase Bliss Generation Loss MKII

Thanks. I’m wondering if CBA is just doing the same mod as described in their video (bridging those pads instead of installing capacitors) or if they have redesigned the board itself so they don’t even have to do the bridging.

You could still use the image above to figure this out. If the board looks identical, silver lumps and all, it’s been modded. If it looks the same, but has chips in those spots, identify the chips. If they’re black and have a 0 on them they’re jumpers and the board is modded. If they look like the other beige/tan chips on the board it’s original: hasn’t been modded.

If the board doesn’t look like the picture, it’s a redesigned board: modded.

So if i would order a GL mk2 from a shop today , i would have to ask them to open it up to know if it’s already modded?

They don’t sell them in shops as far as I know, Chase Bliss went direct a few months ago.

All Batch 2 pedals have the mod, according to their youtube video on the subject.

Oh ok. So if i order it directly from them they probably know what batch they’re selling.

If you order from them you will definitely get a batch 2 version, the batch 1 was shipped last year.

The GAS has officially set in - I mean I just got my Octatrack recently because of this forum!

Who here has one? How do you like it?

FWIW, I was able to take a peek into one and serial #6575 is modded and it looks like the factory mod is done the same way they’ve described in their video (4 solder bridges instead of capacitors).

I had serial.no. 4111 (sold last week), and it was also modded as in the images shared above.

Yes, one of their reps confirmed to me that all batch 2 models since about mid December are definitely bass mod.

I have one. Haven’t done much with it yet beyond playing with knobs and testing out different modes. If you’re into the sound of worn out VHS players, you will love this. It doesn’t take much to get into instant nostalgia zones. Whether that’s musically useful, I’m not sure about, yet. I’m going to find out, though. I think it’s been mentioned in this thread that it’s easy to overdo it, so some restraint will probably serve well. However, I’m not sure I have that restraint, and all my 2023 music will sound like it was recorded to busted tape/VHS machines.

Has anyone from the UK sent their batch 1 back to the EU office for the bass mod?
I can’t find the address on the website, and also wondering if there will be ay issues with import duties?
There shouldn’t be if sending back as a return/repair should there?

My opinion on it has changed quite a bit over the last few months. I loved playing with it at first, but my opinion is slowly souring on it. It doesn’t give me enough control over the wow and flutter, and even though I loved the sound in demos I don’t like it on my own instruments as much, even at more subtle settings. The various models are interesting but are very difficult for me to actually use in a musical context. The mechanical failure features frankly annoy me, especially the pops, drops and crinkles. Thankfully you can turn most of those off.

Classic mode sounds pretty good, but I honestly haven’t explored it as much as I wanted to yet. The filters are nice, and I like the BRR. I really love the saturation in the main mode.

Overall while I don’t hate it, I’m not sure if it’s actually the right device for me and I can’t make myself actually use it in a song. Maybe that will change with more time, but I doubt it.

One of their recent videos talked about how they have a new shipping center in the EU so you won’t have to worry about import duties for repairs.

Thanks. Even within the EU it’s complicated now we’re out of it. But there is now an exception for returns/repairs. Some info on it here.

After avoiding the tape models and higher knob settings for a while, I tried to embrace them and liked the result. You definitely get that „weird old TV show“ vibe quite fast. It‘s also nice to combine OT lofi effects with Gen Loss:

On the top left corner of the board does it have Rev 6 or Rev 7.
First batch are Rev 6.

I’m in the UK - do we know when the next batch is due to be released? Are they still available to buy now?

Anybody in the UK selling one?

Nice one - thank you. Thought I might have missed the boat

So, I mentioned the Kinotone Ribbons. I’ve recently gotten my hands one. I haven’t taken the time to do a proper thorough side-by-side comparison, but I may like it more than the GLMkII. Overall the jury is still out but here are my initial thoughts after a week.

The good:

  • no bass cut unless you want it, and the filters sound good. Far more useful for me than GLMkII’s models
  • complete control over wow and flutter (depth/mix and rate)
  • built-in reverb sounds nice
  • noise, hiss/crackles and dropouts are less up-front if you want them to be
  • proper mix knob, and mix control for most things
  • developer is super responsive and a very active on the forums. More updates planned.
  • Touch FX (various looper modes), filters, compressor and reverb make it a decently compelling utility pedal

The neutral:

  • has less character than GLMkII. I find this to be a positive but it may be a drawback for some.
  • each knob has four functions, and you need to rely on the LED intensity to tell you what the levels are when you switch pages. They are clearly labeled on the device but it did take some getting used to.
  • it has a similar latency/flanging problem as GLMkII (unless at 100% wet), but I find the sound of it a bit less distracting. More chorus-y.

The bad:

  • no saturation, and seemingly no plans to add one

Other:

  • for some reason I have had a hell of a time saving presets. That’s a “me” issue though, not a pedal issue.
