New to synths - just picked up a Digitone and am loving it. However, the sound seems like it’s clipping.
When using the base sound on a blank bank/pattern, and master volume set to about 2 o’clock, I get some harsh clipping when playing a chord of 3+ notes (2 notes seem to work fine). I only have headphones connected to the Digitone, and am using some Beats solo headphones if that matters.
Has anyone else experienced clipping with the Digitone? Or is the base sound supposed to have some clipping? I didn’t change anything that would effect the base sound. Drive is off on the AMP and Overdrive is off on the Master.
I have noted no such thing on mine, tested with base sound, both on Apple earbuds and BeyerDynamic DT770PRO headphones.
Did you notice clipping when connecting the main out to your sound card ? Does changing octave modify that behavior ?
It’s quite possible that it’s a faulty headphone adapter. Tried with some other in ear headphones and noticed clipping as well.
It could also be that the Beats and the other headphones have a 4-conductor input end (tip, ring, sleeve and maybe another ring). I’ve noticed issues using a TRS adapter and the Beats headphones on my amp’s headphone out. Not clipping per se, but just sound issues compared to headphones with a standard TRS input.
It could also be that I don’t know how to properly mix tracks. But if @tobee didn’t have issues with the base sound then it could be the adaptor.
I’ll try out some other headphones and see if that helps.
Holy crap, when I use headphones, I can barely go past 9/10 o’clock before the sound is dangerously loud. I’m using Audio-Technica ATH-M50’s from about 2012, so there’s probably an impedance difference to what you’re using. I would suspect a bad adapter also.
If your beats headphones are TRRS, it could be that the two rings are getting shorted together, meaning that half the signal for one side is going to the microphone, which would explain why you have to turn it up so loud, and might be why it’s clipping.
It’s similar to (but exactly not the same as) when you use a passive splitter, each copy of the signal reduces the overall volume, and means you have to drive the signal harder.
That makes sense regarding the rings getting shorted. I just ordered a TRS cable for my headphones. When those arrive I’ll give it a try to see if that helps.
Resolved! The TRRS cable was the culprit. Got a standard TRS cable for the Beats headphones and now, similarly to cold_fashioned, it is blasting my ears at 9 o’clock.
For whatever reason, I tried the new cable on my OP-1 and it functions the same as the old cable. So the TRRS cable doesn’t seem to be an issue with the OP-1. But it has caused enough problems with other equipment that I’ll use the TRS cable going forward.
