Complementary to M:S ... sample preparation?

I’ve had my M:S for a few weeks now, and I’m just starting to find samples that really inspire me to make music.

But the M:S can only do so much of course … I anticipate preparing samples elsewhere, but what I’ve done so far has been bitty … some stuff in audacity, mucking about with an SP505 for effects.

Is there some obvious solution that I’m missing for sample prep, particularly one shots (not so much loops) for

  • chopping
  • re-pitching (since M:S only goes +/- 2 octaves)
  • adding effects

I’ve considered a 1010 blackbox, but that seems kind of overkill (includes sequencer). I may just have to admit I bought the wrong thing and go for a digitakt instead. Not a great fan of doing music stuff on computers or iPad (dislike mouse and touch pad/screen) but maybe some kind external controller like a fader fox combined with software that can midi-learn the controllers inputs would persuade me otherwise ?

Any ideas ? What am I missing ?

How do you feel about editing on the phone? The Koala app has tons of effects and easy export to wav

Yes … must admit … since writing that post I’m wondering if Koala fits the bill. Downside there is that trimming samples means choosing start and endpoint by sliding fingers on a touch screen … not terrible accurate. (Unless they added midi support for that, which seems unlikely)

My pickiness may lead me eventually to either a BlackBox (may or may not use the sequencing feature) or the Digitakt (to take over both sequencing and sample prep from the M:S).

Ableton?

In the past, that hasn’t enticed me at all (doesn’t appeal to me at all for making music) … but if that’s the right tool for the sample preparation tasks I outlined (?) I guess I may have to bite the bullet and accept the learning curve.

I haven’t tried one yet, but maybe an MPX16 might work for you as a cheaper alternative? Fewer effects, but you get knob-based sample trimming.

Oh, that’s an interesting possibility … I passed over it for a sample player (can’t remember the downsides), but for sample prep it could work … will definitely check that out.

i took a boss RC 202 to make proper loop, adjust the tempo & get it in the computer & slicing the samples in the m:s

I use it all the time for my MS prepping. A lite free version should do you fine I’d reckon

I do agree with @Cornish1999 that if you are committed to preping samples ahead of time, learning to edit on computer is a great long-term solution

This is the way. Ableton Live is my favourite way to create samples, whether curating from software or hardware. The ease of zooming in and out for catching perfect zero-point crossings, the incredible warping algorithms that turn sound into putty, the simplicity of creating perfect loops… It’s a dream come true.

I’ve just (somewhat cheekily) done a feature request for Koala for midi controlled start and end point. Koala looks to me like the best fit so far … ableton can come later

Let’s see, you want great samples for your Model:Samples but you don’t want to buy more equipment, you don’t like computers, iPads, Mouse, touch pads & monitors, you don’t want to learn Ableton Live and most probably do any effort to get those samples. Just lay in bed and wait, someone might come to your door with the greatest samples someday or not…

Not helpful. Misconstrued what I said.

I want to apply effort and money appropriate to what I want to achieve. I’ve already said I’m using audacity and an old SP505, and I’m considering ableton in the future

… ableton can come later

and also blackbox and digitakt

My pickiness may lead me eventually to either a BlackBox (may or may not use the sequencing feature) or the Digitakt (to take over both sequencing and sample prep from the M:S).

I have been creating a sample and loop archive with my MPC Live for a while now.

Getting a Model Samples, I was impressed that I could just load my stereo, 24bit, 48khz library and it just handled them all.

If I didn’t have my MPC, I’m not sure the MS would have been as appealing or useful. I also love using the MPC pads to play the MS chromatical.
