Computer doesn't recognize Digitone when connected via USB

Hi all, Sorry if this is a simple error on my part. I’m trying to update my Digitone but when I plug it into my computer via USB nothing happens. No devices appear. Am I missing something? I’m on Windows 10. I’m hoping the update will fix an annoying bug where the digitone will freeze and have a high pitch tone, happened to me seven times last night.

I am not using Windows with the Digitone myself, so it will be rather guessing, but I would check few things:

  1. Does the Digitone is powered on when connected to the USB port? It takes no power through USB, so it needs usual, external power supply.
  2. Does the Digitone appears on the Device Manager list? I guess it should be listed under Sound, video and game controllers. Is there a warning icon on it?
  3. Do the USB port and the cable work properly? Connect some different device through them and check if it is seen by Windows. Try connecting the Digitone to some other USB port or using other cable.
  4. Do other MIDI devices connect properly with the computer? If you have any, connect it, and check if Windows has no problems with MIDI devices as such.
  5. Run some DAW and check if the Digitone appears in the proper MIDI In/Out list.

Freezing is actually another issue, I am not sure if upgrading will help.

Ok so I updated my Digitone tonight,
No it doesn’t pop up like a normal USB device.
Download C6 transfer off the Elektron website, download the new OS for Digitone.
When you open C6 you should be able to select the Digitone as a midi device.
Hope that helps
(The Elektron transfer worked for Digitakt but not Digitone, so try C6 first. If you can’t get that to work, try Elektron Transfer)

Note that @Buska says “you should be able to SELECT the Digitone” in C6. I could see that Digitone was populated in the C6 config page but did not realize that it could/should additionally be selected. That made all the difference for me. I was hung up with the Digitone just waiting for something to happen, trying USB, MIDI, constipated. Selecting the items on the C6 config screen, “Ok” and away we go. Sweet relief, to finish the constipation metaphor. Best of luck.

That’s what confused me, that my computer didn’t make the normal sound it would when you connect a USB device. After downloading C6 and selecting digitone I was able to get it updated, thank you!

And thaks, @johnheehaw. Sweet relief indeed!

Thanks for the reply! My issue was that I didn’t have C6, I expected the digitone to act like most usb devices when connected to a computer. i.e the computer makes a sound and notify’s you there’s a new device that’s ready to be set up or what have you.

In terms of the freezing it hasn’t happened since I updated it!.. but I only updated it a few hours ago. The night I posted here I would run a sequence with arp notes and after a few seconds it would freeze, but it’s happened before under different circumstances. sometimes it will keep freezing, other times it just needs to be turned off and back on. It actually happened once the night that I got the Digitone, but after turning it off and back on again it didn’t happen for awhile. Let’s hope somehow the update fixed the problem even though it’s not in the bug fixes? Next time it happens i’ll record it and maybe post it somewhere?

You don’t get a USB connection with the /Function/ and /Power-On/ combo.
When turned on in normal mode use the cogwheel button under the display to find the OS update function and perform it. This or use a MIDI interface and C6.
