Connect OP1 into Model Cycles

Hello friends!

This is my first list here, I received the Model Cycles a few days ago, it’s my first step into the Elektron world!

I’m wondering, it’s there any way to connect the OP1 into the Model Cycles? I bought a 3.5 mm to MIDI cable so that I can connect that to the line out of the OP1 and then connect that to the MIDI in of the Model Cyles so that I can record any synth lead into one of the 6 tracks of the cycles. I don’t know if I’m messing up the configuration or if simply you can’t do that.

Thanks for the help!

You can’t no, cycles has no audio ins. MIDI yep.

Despite the switch by many manufacturers to the 3.5mm jack as a midi port, midi transmits no audio. The op1 line out and the ms midi in are two completely different and incompatible ports.

Therefore the only thing I could do would be to connect the OP1 to the model cicles midi in using a cable that converts the usb out into midi in, then put the OP1 in midi controller mode so that at least I could use it’s keyboard instead of the model cycles sequencer buttons, right?

just plug straight from one to the other using a 3.5mm trs - should be compatible if both use midi spec A for the dongle - easy to check and irrespective the MC allows changing teh midi spec type to a B if needed - ultimately no dongles reqd

You need a USB host afaik.

does the OP1 not have a dongle to give DIN MIDI out ?

infelizmente not  - only USB

yep - so it seems, i though ti saw dongles being used on TE stuff before ! never had one

I would actually do the opposite,

Plug the MC into the OP1, use the OP1 as a multilayer looper sometimes or use OP1 as an FX processor ‘A LA SP404’…

Be careful, tons of fun ahead… :hear_no_evil: :black_heart:

Actually there is the possibility to sync up the clock - pocket operator use case, but I never dared to try it.

I’m a mega noobie, can you explain this a little bit easier for me?
Thanks so much and sorry!!

As I say to the other person, I’m a super noobie in this world, can you explain it a little bit easier for me please? Basically you are saying to take midi out from model cycles and process it through the OP1? This way o would only be able to use the OP1 for fx and as a mixer or I could also use it as synth? I would love to be able to improvise with both at the same time, and not have to first record the model cycles into de OP1 tape and then play around with the OP1.

Thanks!!

sadly not - it’s a bogus suggestion - there is no MIDI out dongle for the OP1 despite my assumption, i was confusing it with some other gear

this threw me - i presumed you meant it had MIDI i/o via 3.5mm because it should be obvious that the actual audio out (analog) is not remotely suited to serving midi (digital)

What I said actually has nothing to do with MIDI.

you can still send usb midi from the OP1 to MC I believe and vice versa.

What I said earlier, is pretty much summarized very well here :

It shows how to use the OP1 as a looper with overdubbing layers, also it shows how to apply OP1 FX to an external source.

Like I said, endless fun :robot:
