hey there guys. my digitone is receiving midi clock from a mpc, but i want to play the digitone from a controller with keys. what should i do?? is it possible to to dit it? please notice that teh midi controller i have has the same usb port as the digitone. does it make sense?
Which MPC do you have? Which MIDI Keyboard do you have? If you mean that the keyboard and the Digitone have the same type of USB port on the back and that you want to connect them that way, you can’t. You generally need a USB host to connect your USB MIDI devices to (your computer, a USB MIDI hub). If your MIDI keyboard has MIDI DIN output and your MPC has a MIDI OUT/Thru port (a port that is both OUT and Thru or that essentially merges) you can go from keyboard OUT to MPC IN. MPC OUT to Digitone IN.
To play the tracks on the Digitone, you can either set your keyboard to the Auto-channel that is configured in the Digitone. I believe it is 10 by default. What that does is sends the notes/CC information from the keyboard to whichever track is active.
OR
You can set your keyboard to the MIDI channel that is configured for each track (I believe tracks 1 through 4 have the same corresponding MIDI channel).
Do reply back with your MPC type and MIDI keyboard as well so people know exactly what can be done.
Check out how your MPC handles incoming MIDI and how this can be re-routed to any of the tracks or ports, respectively. I do this with a MPC 5k and DIN-MIDI connections.
There is an “AS TRACK” option, which routes all incoming MIDI to the MIDI-channel and port as defined by the active track settings.
There are modes like “OMNI-X” as well. Those route incoming MIDI as is to the dedicated port “X” only.
Since the MIDI-clock and the transport commands are independent from channels, those will be transmitted anyway.
In the Digitone, Func+MIDI gets you to MIDI setup. In Channels, you can setup which channels correspond to which track as well as the auto-channel.
The auto-channel (by default it’s channel 10 I believe) sends MIDI to whichever track you have active on the Digitone. If you want to record what you’re playing on the Keystep into the Digitone you have to use the auto-channel.
In the Keystep, you set the MIDI channel by pushing and holding Shift + the corresponding key (marked in blue above each note starting at the far left).
Many thanks for your help and information .
Will definitely try it ASAP I’m back in the studio .
If I’m not mistaken the Digitone does not record the Keystep le aftertouch / velocity functionality ?
i have an audio axion 61 and mpc live. i want to make digitone receive clock from mpc but still be able to use another Key controller to play digitone. i thought i could use the axion on usb but both devices have the same tipe of usb port on it. .
Hi, I have an Mpc Live that synchronizes the Digitone, and a Roland Fa that I use as a midi keyboard, but this keyboard is not connected directly to the Digitone, but to the Mpc, in this way there are two advantages: with the keyboard you can play the MPC and all the devices connected to it. The second advantage is that you can create loops on the Digitone using the MPC too. To do this:
-connect your keyboard to the MPC, midi or usb input.
-connect the Digitone to a midi output of the MPC but remember: the MPC does not transmit clock via the USB ports.
-On the MPC you create four midi tracks to which you can assign four midi channels for the four tracks of the Digitone. When you play the keyboard, you must first select the desired track on the MPC, in this way the keyboard will play only on that midi channel. If in the meantime you are recording beats with the MPC, this will also record the notes you play on the keyboard, also sending the Digitone in loop.
With this keyboard / Mpc system I play and create loops and sequences on any synth connected to the output of the MPC, which in practice is a midi-looper.
However it also considers that the MPC works well only when it is itself the Master clock, if you use it in Slave will always be out of time and consequently also the loops you create with it on the other instruments will be out of time.
If you want to use the keyboard directly to the digitone you must use the midi connection, you cannot connect the two instruments via USB, and as I said before you cannot use the USB port of the MPC to synchronize, consequently, to have both the notes from the keyboard that clock from the MPC you must necessarily use midi chain links.
