CV to 0-10V dimmer

Hi all,

so I have an idea of controlling the input voltage of a standard 40W incandescent light bulb using the CV out of my A4 mkII.

I have bought already a Legrand 784 04, which is a 0-10V dimmer, thinking this will be a plug and play like apparatus. However, when i connect my A4 CV out, sending from 0 to 10V trigs (with a slow envelop), the light bulb doesn’t blink…

Even when I try to use only the mechanical button on the front panel of the dimmer, the bulb does not respond, it only stays ON. The only thing I can do is to turn the thing On and Off using the On and Off button…

If any of you people would help me with that…

I know that even if this is relative to my A4 project, it is not specific to Elektron gears and it is more about how to use a 0-10V dimmer for a light bulb. However, if this project happens to be working properly, any A4 would be able to control a light dimmer just passing through a simple 0-10V dimmer. How conveniant this would be ?

By the way, please excuse my poor non-native english writing…

Thank you all for your time

  • // some numbers to consider initially

Power (W) = Voltage (V) x Current (A)
… 40 = 10 x amps

i’m no expert but the 4 Amps needed isn’t gonna be there !

maybe get a very modest LED and give it 0 - 5V for a way less ambitious stage show

  • // in practice with real world items

that transformer is giving out 0>10V when it’s fed Mains voltage 100-240 !!

your bulb is obviously the wrong voltage too, it’s looking for mains voltage, the transformer is for powering specific devices

wrt a led : try to use the wrong led at your peril (obviously i’m not a credible expert, don’t do this, you have been warned, but reflect on these concepts to get you thinking logically about these matters … ) a bright led could easily need 1A, so 5W of power in theory - gotta come from somewhere … the A4 psu needs min 24W and it comes with a 30W adaptor iirc

you get what i’m saying, all these numbers could be derived all wrong, but do you want to spend $50 on a new psu, or worse, if you get this wrong and/or listen to somebody on the internet

a modest 5v led connected properly is not gonna cause any issues if you wanna scratch an itch, but due diligence is always on you

if you did a bit more research, you may be able to use relays or similar to control circuits, rather than power them

  • // if you’re not sure, don’t go there … unless one of the many experts around these parts has some less cautious advice

Hi, thanks for your answer. I did not made my self clear tho. I do use a dimmer, which act as a « continuous relay ». My CV out controls the dimmer going from 0V (no voltage) to 10V (maximum voltage i.e. no attenuation). I sure connect the bulb to a 220V AC source, through the dimmer to control the attenuation it provides.
However, I believe that the max current for CV out is around 0,20mA, so you’re obviously right : it’s not enough to power a bulb…
