Digitone or Nyx

Hey everyone, i’m hoping to get a little advice- i’m torn between getting a Dreadbox Nyx or a Digitone. I’m leaning towards the Digitone because I feel like it probably can do everything the Nyx can do even though one is an analog box and the DT is an FM synth. Am I wrong?
thanks

They’re very different and the choice also depends on the other gear you have.

I’d go digitone
Multitimbral
Can sequence itself and other things
Can do plocking to make drums and glitchy stuff

I’d agree wholeheartedly with @re5et, the digitone is a better starting point for many practical reasons. But if you are looking for something you can sequence from your DAW Nyx is a wonderfully designed analog synth with a crazy unique filter and some sweet reverb onboard. Nyx also has patch points if you want to do some modular patching and pair that with some CV gear in the future.

Digitone hands down. You can play it like a groove box on the couch.

… if your couch is nearby a power outlet or you buy a battery pack.

Thats impossible to answer in a good way.
We don’t know what kind of music do you want to make and what not.

I’d suggest some serious youtube sessions with those synths as search term

I have both (nvx v2)
Given the ultimatum, I’d keep the DN
I simply use it more, it’s just more more flexible and I have hardware mainly aimed at producing tracks for release rather then jamming and exploring sonic terrain

Now having said that if I where to want to have it for exploratory purposes and just appreciate the sonic characteristics of either unit I’d say the nyx wins

So at the end of the day to answer your question in a rather maieutic manor

What do you want to use it for?

I have both and can tell that the DN can’t replicate the Nyx sound.

It’s not about digital vs analogue … it’s about very different synthesis, waveforms, filter characteristics, having one or two filters, and that the Nyx is a semimodular synth, which allows some patchwork, which is not implemented in the DN.

If it’s only about the sound, I would recommend to watch this video from Nick Batt reviewing the Nyx:

and compare this to video from loopop about the DN:

If you look for sounds in a more general way, like bass, leads, angry tones, raspy tones, both might give you, what you want.

The Nyx is a very versatile subtractive synth with its own character. But the DN as a FM synth in an Elektron box is much more versatile, has a sequencer, midi control for other instruments, and opens the door to many typical and unconventional FM sounds …

…nyx is the blade runner machine…as nick’s saying…for real…

and it can do some other nifty stuff…and it’s truu analog…a beauty of the night…no doubt…
but…

digitone is a complete different planet…and so much way more versatile…earthshaking kiks and bass meet otherworldly pads and metallic overtones in an endless dance of lucky dips and happy accidents…

the nyx is a synth that can top any range of synth…but the tone must be already in ur collection by that time…way more bang for the buck…no fancy add on…a workinghorse…

dtone is on here every day…while the nyx gives breathtaking toppings from time to time…
the tone can spit out a whole frame of arrangement at once, the nyx gives u one paraphonic lead line of whatsoevaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa…
