From machine jam to arrangement

I have a lot (dozens if not hundreds) of extended five- to fifteen-minute stereo captures of drum machine experimentations. I always considered them raw material for reconstructing loops into an arrangement. I’m looking for a streamlined workflow for hammering them into something more structured. My current concept is to slice them (by the bar or some other subdivision) into drum racks in Ableton, map them to my keyboard controller and ‘play in’ a sequence of sweet bits and leave out the crap as a quantized midi instrument to novel effect.

Most are in the glitchy beat/dnb/techno headspace, where the interesting bits happen at the bar or beat level.

I’m curious how else people approach a workflow challenge like this, and if there are some smart ways of approaching this problem in Ableton.

what works for me best is iPad with Drambo.
but i work with MIDI clips, not audio loops.
in simplest case, a clip is just a message recalling certaing pattern on physical gear.
