I’d say the Roland S1 would be interesting because it’s small, very light and has a battery.
If I were into this sort of thing I‘d pick an OP-Z, a Model: Samples or a Volca Sample. Model: Samples would be my favourite, needs an external energy source unless you can track down one of the elusive battery handles.
My favorite groovebox for hiking is the new
Roland S-1. It’s about the same size as my feet and fairly inexpensive (as you know, I had to buy two, one for each foot). Wasn’t that hard to secure to my feet either. A yard or two of good old fashioned duct tape and they were on there for good. Highly recommended groovebox for hiking!!!
Seems like the perfect scenario for a Polyend Tracker Mini. Field recorder mic already built-in: sample nature and make music. Weighs 606 grams including the hard case.
To me, this kind of question is like hey, I’m cooking this soup. What do you think are the best socks to wear while I’m doing it?
Cracks me up.
I’ve hiked in places where I’d probably want a Lyra-8 strapped to each foot
surprised theres no Circuit Tracks in this topic.
perfect for jump in/jump out small sessions. 2 (6 voice poly) synthesizers, 4 sample voices, FX, sequencer, velocity sensative grid controller, battery powered.
i still hold on to the original one, even though i have more capable equipment. it just works really good as non try-hard, turn off brain and relax little box.
I think the point of hiking is … hiking.
At some point there will be a thread for best gear for when
Shark diving
Giving birth
Driving
Skiing
Ironing
Playing soccer / sports / swimming
Dancing
Having teeth out
During a hospital operation
On train
In plane
Cleaning drain
Climbing a crane
Sat in toilet with diarrhoea
In a bath
Having a shower
Filling up car with petrol
Choosing food at a buffet
Paying for groceries
Round 3 of boxing match
Sumo wrestling
Being charged for a crime in a court case
The end result is either
Do the activity
Or
The same list of gear in all of these threads
Op1,opz, something with usb power brick , iPhone , tiny groove box like mc101 .
I do wish that ‘mute thread’ button was more easy to press … or maybe I should visit this forum less often. Or an AI not that can spot these threads and hide them for me .
Probably all the above.
Probably easier then all this
Which hikebox is best for grooving?
What’s the best groovebox to use when I’m going out of my way to hang shit on other forum members?
I like using a phone to make field recordings in nature. Dedicated field recorder hardware can be great too.
Other than those or smallish iPad, M8 seems most useful to me in this context, especially in combination with a phone or field recorder. Haven’t tried in many visibility conditions yet though.
However, I would be very careful taking any chances exposing rare or valuable electronic devices to water or other natural hazards
Volcas or other inexpensive/“toy” (respectfully) -like items might be appealing in this context. However, I generally find such devices’ limitations are not worth their size, on the go, especially compared to something like a phone, tablet or M8
I always tend to be in my own world when I make music, so never quite got the idea of wanting to bring music gear hiking, to the beach, or even a coffee shop really.
But…I was just thinking that I see people painting landscapes in the park, so maybe there is something to composing music in nature.
Here’s a shot from one of my hikes outside of Tokyo. I think it could inspire some BoC vibes.
Good luck with the gear search!
Deluge hasn’t been listed so far, seems a great tool.
OP-1 o.g. might be found for way less money than the field.
M8 is fun, but I still lack the spontaneity of the Elektron workflow tbh. Haven’t really gelled with the workflow so far.
Tibetan singing bowl, not strictly a groovebox but you can get your jam on, also functions as a hat, a water vessel, a bowl for eating from, a reflection device if you get lost, a pestle and mortar for grinding herbs, needs no batteries and is less likely to get damaged.
she has her priorities straight too: sketchy tunes, some beer and an apple - all part of a balanced breakfast.
I can always recommend the Model:Cycles. It works perfectly when connected to a portable powerbank. It’s light and super fun to use.
I’d say the Volca Sample 2. Portable and compact, with easy transfer of sounds.
Just hike, enjoy your walk, record your hike as midi, and worry about the music later…
