Itās been a couple of months since we did the conspiracy challenge so I figured itās time for a new one. Tonight I saw Stephen Kingās Firestarter, a movie I havenāt seen since the mid 1980s. Anyway, here is what was most striking about the movie - the sounds. Loads of analog going on in this movie which makes sense given the era and the fact that Tangerine Dream did the soundtrack; a fact I didnāt recall prior to tonight.
It seems to me that this film is brimming over with potential sample material. With that in mind, I thought it would probably be sensible to suggest a synthwave/vapor/cinematic challenge using this film as the foundation for our tracks.
Parameters
Tempo: 80-130 BPM
Sample material: audio from Firestarter, self sourced
Genre: synthwave, vapo(u)r or cinematic
Technical: open to any music hardware or software; analog, FM and period drum sounds encouraged
Good idea for a thread, could I suggest maybe bringing the deadline back a few days to allow for the voting to take place and the winner to be announced on the day of Halloween? Just for extra dramatic effect
Just a friendly suggestion as I understand folks might need time to get a track together
Also that kid freaks me out, she stares right into your soul
@DavyP, Iām good with moving it to 10/30. Initially I thought peeps would ask for a few extra days but even if I move it weāll still have 26 days to get it done.
@Snipecatcher and @J0n35y I hear you on the comfort zone and genre statements. These arenāt genres Iāve ever written in so Iām challenging myself as well.
What the hell is āvapourā anyway?! Am I showing my ageā¦
EDIT:
āVaporwave is an electronic music microgenre from the early 2010s. Its stylistic influences include chillwave, smooth jazz, chopped and screwed, new-age, and pop. To explain it in words kind of ruins the point. Vaporwave is the muzak that plays in an elevator in a mall in a futuristic Japanese cyberpunk dystopia.ā
I think itās fairly likely I might end up in this territory now that I know what it is ha!
@finalform, no sweat, I hope Iām not stealing thunder. This was unplanned until I made it through the title sequence of this film tonight when I knew this had to happen. Inspiration strikes at funny times.
Iām definitely in for this one, Iāve done the odd bit of synthwave/vaporwave. Iām just listening to some of this soundtrack and it sounds like vaporwave already without even being repitchedā¦
At its most basic itās screwed funk with an '80s mall/TV aesthetic. From there you can find tons of other variants. Thereās lots of really good stuff - itās proved an interesting way of exploring and recycling consumer culture IMO. The two classic essentials that arguably kicked the whole thing off are Floral Shoppe by Macintosh Plus (the ever-prolific Vektroid) and Eccojams Vol 1 by Chuck Person (aka Oneohtrix Point Never).
Iāve never made this style of music, but I am down for a challenge.
Plus I love dark sounds, dark vibes & horror movies
Iāll give it a shot!! Pew! Pew! (my gun shots)
Recorded the audio from the movie into Logic today and started hacking away at the parts I might use. Gonna try to make my entire jam just samples from the filmā¦ weāll see
I think Iām going to try to record the audio tonight. There are some cool percussion sounds to be had towards the end of the film. I was sort of thinking Iād do the same but part of me wants to throw some old analog into the mix. I guess weāll see how it goes when I get to choppinā. I canāt wait to hear your results.
