HELP: Digitone, Digitakt, MOXF: MIDI

Peeps, long time MPC user, and after months of using my Digitakt as a fun box and just sampling stuff in want to get a bit more serious. I’ve added the digitone (what a beauty)

I’m looking to use my MOXF as a master keyboard as well as a sound module sequenced by the digitakt. Need help setting up.

Digitakt Master
Digitone Slave
MOXF midi keyboard and sounds

How do I set this up?

Here’s what I think:

MOXF M: OUT <> DIGITAKT IN
DIGITAKT THRU <> DIGITONE IN
DIGITONE THRU <> MOXF IN

Question:

  • can the digitone receive the sync from the D’Takt thru port?

  • Since if I use the OUT on digitakt I cannot use the MOXF as master keyboard for the d’tone as it needs the THRU for that.

Any advice is welcome! Thanks

Or would I be better off doing:

MOXF OUT <> D’TONE IN
D’TONE OUT <> DIGITAKT IN (for midi sync, that would make the tone the master though)
DIGITONE THRU <> MOXF IN

That would mean I’m sequencing the MOXF on the DIGITONE which is quite new to me and I would be limited to 4 tracks instead of 8.

Is there another way? Do I need to use a computer as the master? And will I then still be able to trigger transport for the hardware boxes (don’t wan’t to revert to the space bar for it)

I think it will work like this:

DT as master (sync; clock & transport send), IN from MOX (out), THRU to DN (in). I don’t think clock is neccassary on MOX since your are using it as master keyboard. Otherwise you will need a MIDI-merger to double DT’s out (to MOX in) to avoid a loop.

Yes, the sync is available on every thru port.

No, you don’t need a DAW. Transport is triggered on DT’s play.

Hope this helps!

You can circumvent this problem with a different configuration.

MOXF MIDI Out to DigiTakt MIDI In
DT MIDI Out to DigitoNe MIDI In
DN MIDI Thru to MOXF MIDI In

You will need to switch the MOXF to “Local Off”.

Set the MIDI output channel of the MOXF to the auto channel number of the DT.

Set the DT’s MIDI sequencer track to channel numbers that will be used by the MOXF.

When you change the active track on the DT, the notes from the MOXF keyboard will be automatically routed to that track.

Set the DT to send MIDI clock and transport. The DT’s MIDI clock signal will be received by the DN (and the MOXF, if necessary).

You won’t need a computer.

hmmmm…
MOX will receive its own out, local off won’t avoid this and he looses master keyboard function…

I don’t have a MOXF to try this out myself, but the MOXF has flexible settings for MIDI channels for send and receive and with some care it should be possible to set up the MOXF for multi-timbral operation in a blank Song or Pattern.

Thanks Guys! i had done fiddling around already in the meantime because I was impatient to get started.

Now have it set up like this and it works like a charm. Oddly, I’m not using thru and still works so maybe the DN passes midi through on the out.

DN OUT <> DT IN (DN master)
MOXF OUT <> DN IN
DT OUT <> MOXF IN
MOXF send/receive channel: 10
DN & DT auto channel: 10
DN & DT midi: A=11, B=12, C=13, D=14
MOXF in voice mode - for multitumbral

i can now use the MOXF as a masterkeyboard if I select track 10 on the MOXF.

Now I can sequence the MOXF from both the digitakt and the digitone by adding the respective channel on the midi channel and selecting the track on the MOXF. Works like a charm.

Thanks for the help!
