I’m having some trouble fitting in the Digitone into my mixes. How do you guys go about fitting it in? It’s just quite sterile for my mixes, gets lots
I have developed the thinking that if something is difficult to fit into a mix, I dont need it.
I find the sounds I like to make with digitone to be very complex in harmonics, this means I want a simple composition to allow space for the digitone sounds. There is no point featuring a supet complex sound only to drown it in a complicated mix with 16 other sounds for example.
Other than that, how do I mix? I move the faders untill it sounds good. Seriously.
Easy. I basically only make tracks with it on its own
start with digitone / then after you make some banging patterns add other elements and machines , start with extra drums.
please elaborate what “quite sterile for my mixes” means
I’m cranking the master overdrive quite hard to get it to fit with my digitakt compression and it’s coming closer now but While the digitakt sound feels more round, this one feels more flat in a way. Might have to use overbridge to eq it heavily
hmm, so you are describing a lower output volume from the DN?
IME the distortions on the DN can drastically change the sound. Don’t use them just to get more loudness, use them to shape the tone.
DN isn’t the loudest box in the world. If I use it with my rytm, I almost always have to turn the master volume knob to max to get close to acceptable levels going into the rytm. This problem is easily fixed with a mixer though, or by gainstaging the other boxes to a lower level if no mixer is available.
not only volume but also bite
if it doesn´t fit into the mix just leave it out
Yeah never try crowbar something into a mix. If the DN isn’t working put it aside for experimenting with seperately from your production time. Once you’ve mastered it, it has enough tone shaping ability to be suitable for all occasions.
