How to set up a Drum Rack for OB in Live?

Hi,
I would like to create a Drum Rack in Live for Overbridge (A4 and AR) so that I can trigger the BD, SD etc. easier with Push. So C1 would be the BD, D1 the SD etc. (or one MIDI-File for ALL the sounds, instead of using one MIDI-Track per Sound)

Unfortunately a Drum Rack needs a new instance of a plugin in every slot, and OB only allows one instance per hardware instrument. Or is it possible to route the notes from a drum rack vie a special midi tool to the different tracks of A4 and AR? Or can I configure AR and A4 accordingly (then I must have missed something in the manual)

Has anyone done this before or a handy solution?

Hi Voodoo,
that was quick, thanks a lot. But how do you configure AR, so that he receives each instrument on a different MIDI note on the same channel? the A4 has something called Multi Map Edit, but it seems the AR is missing this. Or do I not need that?

There is nothing to setup. The lowest notes are triggering the different kit sounds. If i remember correctly, the midichannel doesnt matter. This works on all channels.

Hi Voodoo,
hmm, when I play different MIDI-Notes on my AR with your Drum Rack, I always trigger BD1. You configuration just translates every note to a C2 note. I would need to change the MIDI-Channels to trigger SD1 etc. But I want C1 to trigger BD 1, D1 to trigger SD 1 and so on, all on the same channel.

A solution could be a MIDI-Tool in Live (maybe via Max for Live) that translates the following

C1 = C1 on MIDI Channel 1
D1 = C1 on MIDI Channel 2

etc.

Then I could route that output to another Track with the AR-Plug-in.

Does anyone know a MIDI Tool that does this?

Ok, I figured it out. You dont need any MIDI Effects, just a bit of routing:

  1. Make a Drum Rack with 12 empty Chains (one for each voice). Name them BD, SD etc.

  2. Make a Track with OB Rytm

  3. Make a Group of 12 MIDI-Tracks. Each Track gets the Input from the Drum Rack and the according Chain (BD, SD etc.) and sends it to the OB RYTM Track with the according Track. Set Monitor “In” on each track.

  4. Now you can write a MIDI Rythm in just one file on the Drum Rack Track, which is much more convenient.

  5. You can also make a group of Audio Track which gets the output of each individual Track of the OB Rytm Track to record them seperately.

from the manual (1-22) page 14/15/16

MIDI NOTES
Some functions can be triggered by sending MIDI note values from an external MIDI device (a MIDI keyboard or
a computer, for example) connected to the Analog Rytmvia standard MIDI cable or a USB 2.0 A to B connector
cable.

Of the 128 notes in the standard MIDI range, 0-11 corresponds to notes C0 through to B0, the leftmost octave
(which is sometimes called C-2 - B-2 in certain applications) will trigger the Sound of track 1 through to track 12,

ANALOG RYTM CONTROLS
16
respectively (provided they are set to their default channels 1-12). These note values map to each of the twelve
tracks, regardless of which track is active.

Everything you have to do, is insert my rack and trigger the lowest possible notes.
If your input cant reach the lowest notes, you could insert the midieffecr “pitch” to shift down your input

Hi Voodoo,
this sounds a lot easier, thanks! Ill try that out.

Hey!

So this setup works when having Overbridge Mode enabled in the AR??

I thought Overbridge mode doesn’t allow midi in no?

If I have OB mode on in the AR, the External Instrument plugin doesn’t show the AR on the “MIDI To” routing, so how can the drum rack control the AR with OB mode on?

thanks!

The rack uses the overbridge plugin. ExternalInstrument isnt used.
The trick is to set “receive” in the chain to “all”.

ok. I think I’m too much of a newbie here but, after I insert your instrument. How do I get the audio routing to come out my master in the DAW?

sorry, I’m sure this is very easy to solve. Can’t get my head around it. New to OB.

thanks

the audio comes from the overbridge-plugin.
You must enable the outputs in the overbridge control panel.

Yea, just figured out there is a control panel for it.
managed to get this working!

thanks for the help!!!

Hi Voodoo,
when you only have one chain with ob in it, you cant trigger the sound in a drum rack for push. therefore Id recommend to make extra empty chains in the Rack for the notes C - 2 to B -2 and put an external instrument in each of these chains. You can the route the midi-output of each external instrument to the Overbridge channel in the same drum rack and get the audio output from it as well. This way you can play all the instruments of the rytm via push and get the individual output (well at least 6 to 8 channels) into the same rack.
