Imgur to delete all non-registered user images next month

Per the new policy update:

Our new Terms of Service will go into effect on May 15, 2023. We will be focused on removing old, unused, and inactive content that is not tied to a user account from our platform as well as nudity, pornography, & sexually explicit content. You will need to download/save any images that you wish to save if they no longer adhere to these Terms. Most notably, this would include explicit/pornographic content.

Among other things, this is almost certainly going to impact community guides and tips across the internet. Internet history takes another hit

I’ve never hosted any images with imgur, but this is probably a good heads up for a lot of people. I guess it remains to be seen with what vigor they implement and carry out this “scheduled purge”.

Twitter’s shitting the bed, Reddit is going to go hard on similar soon, I miss a less corporate internet.

“Web2” corporate user-generated content was bad enough, at least what NFTbros called “Web3” is dying a slow, embarrassing and ugly death.

I remember pre-“Web2.0” I used to have a “meme folder” on my hard drive. My phone is perpetually filled with them and I purge weekly, it’s probably bad that Imgur is clearing house but also, I can’t worry about all the content taking up space in my brain either.

That excellent enshittification piece is also available here, for those who can’t read it on Wired without getting hassled to subscribe:

“all those memes will be lost in time, like tears in rain”

Yay - scarcity makes culture more interesting. Better than nfts anyway.

Some ppl are probably filling HDs right now and good on them

It’d be nice if we could as a society ponder a bit more on the barrage of “content” (not just image collateral, of course) shot at us from the firehose before the deluge of AI sludge fills up Imgur’s servers more than they were prior to this.

The difference of note with trash memes and “content” is that it takes vastly less time to generate these than it does to consume them.
