Inputting sequencer data with ext keyboard

I’m looking at page 25 of the manual.

" * You can use an external MIDI controller such as a keyboard to input NOTE and TRIG VELOCITY data when you are in GRID RECORDING mode. Just press and hold a [TRIG] key, and then play a note on the external keyboard."

i’m controlling the tracks fine with midi, but when i try to record midi note and velocity by holding a trig key and playing a note, i just get the root note and velocity every time. sorry if this is a dumb question but i’ve been trying to figure it out for a while now.

Set the external keyboard to transmit on the Auto midi channel of the MC
