I don’t have the A4, I’ve just been doing research into less expensive / more modern bread+butter grooveboxes than MD, I had the impression you could set up a 4-sound kit on A4, but it seems like no? When you play the first four trigs outside of record mode do they not play the tracks like on other Elektron devices?

You can multimap a drum kit even use multiple voices for this

None of the chromatic-focused Elektron boxes do this. The A4 takes it a step further and doesn’t allow chromatic play on the trigs at all, instead using the little 1-octave keyboard exclusively.
You can make a “kit” of drum sounds though and map it across the keyboard using the multimap feature. I haven’t tried this though so don’t know if it works with the onboard keyboard. I assume it does!

A4 Multi Map does work with the onboard mini keyboard, but only when you are in the Multi Map edit menu.

You can also use midi loopback to play the multi map with one of the tracks.
