Logic Pro coming to iPad

Can’t imagine using a full DAW on an iPad, not least without a bunch of peripherals attached. Which would tie the device down to a desk. Which defeats the purpose of using an iPad.

When I had an iPad I enjoyed using simple sound recording apps for capturing samples then dropping them into Dropbox for later assimilation into my sample library. Intricate sound design and composition sounds like a lesson in pain with just a touch screen and keyboard. I’m sure it’s something I could learn but… Nah

I think the strength of the iPad is that it can become different things so easily. It’s a tablet, but with a Pencil it’s a sketchbook. With the Magic Keyboard thing it’s a laptop.

Music-wise, it can already hook up to midi controllers, audio interface etc, and be a MacBook. But you can also unplug everything and use all the amazing touch-first audio units on iOS, now inside Logic. Thumbjam, for example.

Plus, Logic’s own quick sampler and live loops look designed for the touch screen.

The Macbook, on the other hand, can only work in one mode.

I don’t think of it as “tying down” the iPad. More that it adds yet another mode of use.

I agree the iPad is a chameleon, which is a strength.

I think elements of it could be. I think it’s intriguing that the strip above the keyboard here looks very Ableton-esque, where this strip is currently a multiclick job in the main OSX version (as I understand it - correct me if I’m wrong.!) So there’s no reason why they couldn’t use this exercise to smarten up Logic’s UI. At the same time, this is kinda cramped, so with a bit of extra space you could broaden this out a tad (eg show more tracks.) But being forced into a constraint like this should help them tweak the desktop UI.

This is the key point. For me the design of this has a hint of the classic DAW about it, but the intention is to make it a unique sidekick to the main Logic. Ableton has Push, NI has Maschine, Apple has iPad. They will keep down that road as (I’m guessing) they are best placed to adapt and develop instruments specifically for it.

But with this - is it a complete rewrite or a recomplile of old code with some flags for the compiler added ?

Coming from GarageBand, does Logic Pro still has the cheesy smart instruments like Smart Guitar, smart piano etc?
They were an awesome and quick source of sampling materials, especially the strum ones…

The UI has clearly been extensively reworked and I imagine there’s a huge amount of other work gone into porting this, even if the core code remained roughly the same. I’d guess a multi year project for a team.

iPhone 13 = 2532x1170
iPad Pro = 2732x2048

About the same num of pixels, but I could never werk with desktop res on a phone. I wouldn’t be able to use or see it. And would fucking hate a simplified v that would be useable on a phone…on my desktop or lappy.

A: there should be device specific versions

B: I’ll never use Logic on a phone/pad
how I hate cell phones fuuuu :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

edit: unless the lappies get replaced by pads + BTKB, which it feels like it may be headed that way eventually.

I don’t think it has built-in equivalents to those, but it does still ship with some of the most arresting / alarming synth design this side of 1997. I really hope these beauties make the transition:

For best effect, please adjust your distance from the screen so they’re either too small to read or very large and horribly smudged.

i’m actaully impressed that they’ve still not updated those emagic designs. does that musty old book smell waft out your mac’s speakers when you open them?

Out of my Mac’s speakers if I’m lucky.

Meanwhile, most internal plug-in GUIs have been modernized, except:

ES Synths (all variants)
EVOC 20
Ultrabeat
Delay Designer

I think in the future they’ll merge somehow. I bet Logic for iPad is built using SwiftUI, so I’m thinking they’ll migrate to a unified UI in the future.

QuickSampler for iPad for instance, is a bit different than the one for Desktop. It has a more polished look. So I’m thinking they’ll merge along the way.

Totally, despite much trying i’ve yet to find a size where they don’t look completely crap.

I’ve been thinking - since I switched to hardware for music making and use daw mostly for mixing and mastering, monthly subscription could actually help me to finish projects by setting a deadline and “penals” in a form of 5 bucks for each additional month - kind of like renting a studio in the old days

make it rather 500 bucks a month for a more motivating punitive incentive

Send me $100 a month and I’ll send pestering emails everyday to urge your creativity.

I will thoroughly enjoy testing out the new app for a month to see how I like it. No biggy if that $5 is wasted if I don’t like it.

For 500 I’d became hyperproductive

I think the first month is free

Did you ever hear about applying for a full-time job? I heard it pays more than 500 a month in most places. Imagine the productivity boost!
