Maximising one track on the Digitone…
Great job. Makes me even more excited about the digitakt. I have to ask though, does this have an advantage over spreading it through the tracks? Isn’t this one track using a significant amount of voices?
I don’t have a Digitone (yet), but I use this method pretty frequently on the Digitakt. It’s certainly useful when you’re running out of tracks, but I don’t see many other advantages apart from that. Separating out your sounds across tracks is almost always preferable because it gives you the most flexibility when performing. This could be fine if you plan on leaving your box running without any live tweaking, but I find bringing tracks in and out is pretty essential for structuring an interesting performance.
Having said that, I can imagine using one track for sound-locked drums, one for bass, another for a pad, and then a lead track could be a great groovebox application for the Digitone.
Just curious, I don’t have a digitone yet, what are your poly/voice settings? This will work by default or do you need to allocate note voices to your track?
It works best if you use the default settings and let the DN allocate automatically, at least in this case. I didn’t check how much this was pushing the polyphony limit, but it’s probably getting pretty close.
This is mostly an extreme example just as an exercise, really. It’s one of the first things I try with every new bit of gear I buy. But I think it has its advantages, for example by grouping all drums on one channel, or bass and kick, etc. It does make muting specific sounds difficult (or impossible), but one thing to note is that if you’re using two sounds on one track and one is sound-locked, the default sound can be muted by turning the volume down on the AMP page. The sound-locked trigs should then continue to play.
