MC 707 / 101 : New Roland Grooveboxes

Just ordered the MC-707 this afternoon it’ll be here tomorrow, keen to find out what it can do… looks like a cool sound design tool too…

Where are you guys ordering from?

SamAsh has a bunch

I get the disappointment that the drums are sample based and not ACB.

However, the sample editing section looks very powerful, still. Especially for drums. Watching the loopop video at the 14 min mark, each of the 16 drum sounds on Just one channel can be made from FOUR different .wavs. That’s insane. Lots of individuality and flavor can be cooked up under the hood. Loads of per .wav parameters to fine tune as well.

This alone has me reconsidering getting the TR8S. Even if all I did on the MC-707 was use all 8 channels for drums, it could be satisfyingly deep and adventurous (depending how much labor one wants to employ).

Just thinking about how layered and crafted my favorite kick, snare, clap, and hat sounds are… this thing is starting to excite me.

Yeah - you can layer sounds on the TR-8S to an extent by setting instrument tracks to trig off each other. But not to that degree.

The TR-8S is more interesting for its instrument/track FX and the potential for sound shaping there.

Very true. Different strokes for different folks.

Appears to be a very capable groove box and perhaps the most “Ableton in a box” product we have seen yet.
I really dig that you can still mute individual drums within a single track, and turn those different mute combos into scenes if you desire. This makes a drum track almost akin to a drum rack, and keeps the track count down, opening up more possibilities. Imagine an OT with polyphonic sample slices, that’s the best analogy I can come up with.

And I love that it can be as deep (diving into those 4 wav layers per drum sound, working the sequencer tricks, copying clips from other projects live) or simple (set up 5 drum tracks of simple one drum sample per track, plus 3 synth tracks, and just jam) as you want it to be.

This is a quality that is hard to find in gear. Simple and intuitive enough to draw you in and get going, but deep enough that you won’t feel limited should you wish to really dig in.

Does anyone know what kind of USB Audio latency the MC-707 is dealing with whilst streaming all tracks to a DAW?
I really wasn’t in the market for such a groove box, but the more I dive into the manual and feature set, the more it is becoming too good to pass up.

Sometimes you want to drink a beer without having to think about the beer you’re drinking (looking at you, microbrews…)

707 looks super fun. A 101 along side the TR8S would be kind of fun too…

Desk space, minimalism, focus, money, etc…all play a factor over here

Finally got my 707 and had a chance to try it.

It’s nice, it misses a few things here and there but overall it’s great.

What I miss the most would be overdubbing, it would greatly help with the looper tracks limitations. Right now you need two tracks to use it as a proper looper or if you want to resample the effects.

Also, for people who want to update it, you don’t need to get the sd card out if you use the storage mode, it’s not stated on the website but it just works since what you access is the sdcard in the end.

I dont know. Im still on the shelf about this one. For the same money i could get the Isla SP2400 coming out in a few months. Its a legend follow up to the 1200… Decisions decisions.

Sounds fantastic for people who don’t mind the 50% price difference and having 64 pads.
But that’s not me.

Let’s keep things on topic, eh?

On the flip side, I’m crazy about mine. I had the Force and sent it back after 2 weeks. Couldn’t gel with that workflow at all. Some people just connect with instruments differently.

I’m afraid the same thing will happen to me if I get one.
