MC 707 / 101 : New Roland Grooveboxes

Regarding my productivity with the 101 I‘m really tempted to try a 707.
Regarding my love for the faders I‘m tempted to pair it with a TR8/s :see_no_evil:

I thought the 707 wasn’t for me. I hadn’t ACTUALLY watched any vids or demos but i just had that feeling.

But those vids @Unifono uploaded got me interested. I really love the sounds, as they are nostalgia inducing.

Started watching a few more videos & i’ve really liked what i’ve seen.

I’m getting an Akai Force on wednesday & I have an OT. More than enough to work with/on, but i’ll be using them separately for different things & the 707 would compliment that way of doing things.

That said, between the Force & the OT i probably have everything covered, except the synthesis (not convinced with the Akai plugin synths)

We shall see.

if you’re mainly interested in the sounds, you might even consider the 101. Use the akai or ot as sequencer and the 101 just as sound box.
There are many nostalgia sounds, where simple macro controls like cutoff or envelope settings often are sufficient to get what you want.
And if you‘re away from studio you can use it as all in one portable box. I made all this demos on my couch or balcony :slightly_smiling_face:

Got my 101 for about 300 euro

If you have a computer sign up to roland cloud for a month and auto sample every sound into the mpc and have it as a huge library

They don’t look particularly accessible on the 101 though.

another good option for the non lazy people :upside_down_face:

the sound browsing is ok imo.
The editing tedious and limited.
But there are many great sounds right out of the box

I actually enjoy using this mainly as preset machine, cause I spend enough time on sound design on the A4 and digitone

That would be a benefit in my current situation.

The strings on that are lovely.

Reminds me of the strings in this.

I’m beginning to think the 707 could be my IDM box. Giving my OT the side eye now.

Thanks! Will listen later. It’s the second time stasis was mentioned in comments on my 101 videos.
Didn’t know the artist before, but already had a listen to an album of them.

They were Black Dog founder members in the original trio.

You’re thinking of Plaid (Ed Handley & Andy Turner)

Stasis = Steve Pickton

But all part of that early 90’s UK techno/artificial intelligence/idm scene.

I’ve just read the comment. It’s interesting that some of your tracks are very much like those early B12, Stasis, Likemind tracks, without you even being aware of it or those artists.

That era & sound in techno is my soul music. So if the 101 / 707 can pull that off, then i’m in.

And thanks to you you’ve brought that directly to my attention.

It’s crazy that you can trawl through loads of online content., never hearing or finding anything that grabs your attention, and then all of a sudden someone does something that hits the spot and your opinion changes. Really brings home the point that you need to demo things in person.

My struggles with this continue, and I’m evaluating whether to return it. It’s so comprehensive and flexible in many ways, and bafflingly frustrating in others.

My latest whine is that p-locking the filters is poorly handled - the sound plays for a split second before the lock is applied, so changing the cutoff from high to low sounds bad - you get a brief click from the high setting. You can manage this by applying the lock a step earlier, but this isn’t always possible. It doesn’t happen if you p-lock a pitch change, but it’s very noticeable on the filter.

I get that it’s a Groovebox with a plethora of features, but if you make p-locking a feature then it should work - certainly none of my Elektron gear has this issue, and the 707 is hardly a budget device. Another email to support, I suppose.

Despite my many moans, I do enjoy using and exploring it. But I don’t think I’ve owned a piece of gear that’s provoked quite such a Jekyll & Hyde response from me…

I have for sure. Any recommendations are welcome. I missed a lot of 90s is electronic music, cause I was listening mainly to hip hop :slightly_smiling_face:

Started to discover rephlex artists that are not aphex twin :upside_down_face: I‘m in love with Bochum Welt at the moment

Is there a limit on sample length when uploading to pads on the drum kits? Could you for example put on a vocal sample at 5 seconds? Have maybe 4 vocal samples and 12 drum hits on the 16 pads in one kit?

Thanks

Any users of said machine here?

Specifically, can clips be triggered (also as one shot) with an external sequencer?

Thanks

I’ve only messed with internal sequencer.
I’d dig into the manual / any updates they might’ve released.
I think clips can be loop / 1 shot .
You need want to look at scenes too .
