Yeah, they blew it in terms of practical use, other than recording. Sheesh. I wonder if there is any hope they will “fix” it.
Edit: might have been too harsh. Yes, it is not ideal, but it is not unbearable. Especially when weighed against being able to power the MC-101 and record audio into the iPad while using Eventide effects, etc. with ONE CABLE.
I set D.USB Mixout to OFF and set the fader in AUM appropriately (Very high, but not too much). MC-101 master volume knob very high as well. An AU limiter like Amazing Noises Limiter is quick and easy too. Really nice saturation option too if you want it.
I got the MC-101 about a month ago, and a Model:Cycles around 2 weeks ago. MC-101 is a lot deeper, I found it very frustrating at first (I never gelled w/ Roland’s workflow), almost returned it, but decided to be patient. Muscle-memory is occurring now, but it’ll take me a little longer to figure everything out, as there are lots of hidden functions. I keep the manuals open on my iPad.
Some feedback on the 1.6 update - they haven’t fixed the clip chain bug, so it’s still not usable if you have any kind of decay on your sounds.
In addition to this, I’ve found a new bug (not sure if it’s new to 1.6 or I just hadn’t noticed it before). If you make two clips on the same track using a mono synth voice and then manually switch clip, the clip you’re switching to uses a new voice that doesn’t cut off the previous clip. So if you have a bass with a long release and you have a C on step 14 of the first clip and step 1 of the second clip, you’ll get two Cs running over the top of each other, with all the mess you might imagine.
Just to taunt me even further, you can fix this by chaining the clips, which cuts off the sound - but as already discussed, chaining cuts off ALL sounds, mono or otherwise.
The clip features were a big draw for me with the 707, so this is really disappointing stuff. I’ll file new reports for both problems in 1.6. I reported and demonstrated the chain bug a while back, but didn’t get any feedback other than it was being sent to the developers.
I haven’t confirmed myself, but I understand the LFO sync is still broken too, despite being known about for a good while. These are core features and advertised as part of the device, and it’s a shame to think they’ve been left as-is in favour of adding new features. I know that’s not always how development works, but, you know, moaning does help a little.
The more I’m learning this thing the more I like it, it should not be understated how easy most things are once learned, I was a bit concerned that the UI might be a bit too menu dive-y, but seems that for most of the stuff I want to do this isn’t the case.
I didn’t have the 707 long enough to really compare, but I think the 101 seems more direct despite being smaller with less controls (and of course half the tracks) less synth editing but I don’t really intend to use those as much as the drums/samples and on that score the 101 is actually better for me.
I am finding it strangely endearing. After beating my head against the wall over the class compliant USB audio issue some more, I gave it a whirl standalone and completely lost track of time while having a lot of fun with it. I feel like the labyrinthine interface can be unraveled, or at least learned…
Yeah same, definitely gets easier with familiarity. I ordered a printed reference manual today but by the time it arrives on Monday/Tuesday I think I probably won’t need it for anything other than stuff like fx parameter overviews etc.
I really like how each clip can have its own fx/samples/tone and step settings, then scenes can be stored with combos of these for an almost Ableton clip type experience. I almost got tempted to try the Akai Force but its overly DAW like nature made me look elsewhere for a clip launcher, too much of what I don’t need. I think the little 101 is just enough yet without being too restrictive.
I, on the other hand, won’t be keeping mine. Learned it quick enough, got some loops going I kind of like, but I’ve really zoomed in now on the stuff I already have, so new kits have to fight for their place.
This is true getting to this place took some exploring, fuelled by that curiosity. So I’ll keep doing that, it got me here after all:blush:and I love to just break out a new kit, get to know it, just see what kind of conversation we can strike up. I’m deeply attaches to my Prophet 12 module now, tho. I don’t see myself parting with that ever, unless Sequential comes with a Rev2 which brings something new to the table. Like the Pro3 sequencer or something.
