It all sounds quite soft and cheesy to me - nothing like the way the ACB boutiques sound. No doubt, people will do amazing stuff with it. Certainly not saying it’s junk. Just get the impression it’s missing a bit of mojo somewhere.
Time stretching made my Digitakt a bit jealous. Other than that - meh … especially for this price
The sample management on the TR8S was a total pain. I kept thinking they would create an app to edit samples but that never happened. It doesn’t look like this is any different based on that CDM review.
Honestly this video sold me on it 4 partials per synth track and 4 sample layers per pad in drum mode is awesome.
I really like the immediacy of my tr8s over any other drum machine Ive got and the looper on this makes it the perfect companion to my modular gear. I don’t “need” it but I will definitely be buying it.
soo. immediate or painful menu diving?
the second hand prices went down quite a bit and I keep thinking of getting one but only for immediacy.
How much menu diving apart from sample editing?
should maybe better ask this in the tr8s thread…
Both. It’s very immediate once you’ve got your kit set-up. Setting up or editing your kit however requires some rather 90s-style menu diving.
Right, I’ve read and watched enough. This one’s not for me, for sure.
Only kit out there that threatens my Octatrack as a solution for a box with a fairly generous amount of sets in it, is the Toraiz SP-16. The four bar limit is the main buzzkiller for me, and the reason I’m even considering it is that the Toraiz workflow does seem to work better for than, despite the loveliness of the OT and our years together.
Off topic, I guess. So I’m done now.
I can’t help but wonder what are the limitations on the 101, compared to the 707, since it’s engine is (theoretically) the same… but the 101 has that tiny screen.
also wondering if Roland (or a 3rd party) will come up with a nice app to edit patches, synth engine, etc… an iOS app for this would be pretty amazing - and it could very well compensate for the lack of a proper screen on the 101 (I mean proper in relation to it’s engine potential)
well i bet now is a good time to buy a tr8s used on reverb or ebay if you were looking. I also noticed a lot of the ju06 going up yesterday on reverb.
I am watching already
QY100 yes, still good for writing. And really compact. And … and … I have to admit I really like many of the sounds (probably in the minority there).
The choir pads and landlord stabs are still dope.
The mc-707 has some Korg Electribe 1 vibes.
there is something very nice about the QY100 rubber buttons for tapping out a melody too. Old tech but still working well.
I never gelled with my qy100. Was one of the first things I ever bought and I wasn’t fully understanding of hardware. Had been using trackers on Amiga before and basic hardware samplers. I had nothing to link it with and the internal sounds didn’t do it for me. Think I got it for about £50 so didn’t regret the buy and moved it on for a korg poly 800
Did Roland add a step nudge, or micro-timing feature to these new grooveboxes? It was a big turnoff for me that it was not included on the TR-8S.
I’m sure I saw on sonic state vid it had micro timing and probability per step.
The Roland guy weirdly talks about something very unrelated when asked about song mode , maybe it was editing.
Cool, thanks.
Except the OT is is not a plastic box and that surely is made of the same stuff the TR-8S is.
no, not really
Yeah, they guy on the sonic state videos is honestly the worst product demoer I’ve seen, even Dan from akai has a leg up on him imo. I really like the sound of the system 1m and the videos that guy did with it made me almost not get it. Sadly I think we all need to wait on some good demos once some musicians spend some real time with them.
I’ll still go Octatrack over the MC 707. The MC has an advantage in the synth section but the OT has more tracks more sample power and more options.
