MD UW Mk1 - broken knob shaft replacement

Hi guys,

I found a real bargain today - a Mk1 MD UW at around 200 Euro (a fresh auction though, will probably be quite a bit more), but with 1 caveat: 1 broken knob (the shaft is broken right at the base). I wonder, how difficult is it to get a replacement knob and actually have it replaced? I do have some soldering skills, but nothing too fancy really.

I recommend searching the old forum with terms like “replace encoders”.

Here’s one thread to start… http://elektron-users.com/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=2&func=view&catid=9&id=79839

Best of luck!

I’m not yet sold on actually trying to bid on it… but thanks!

You def need the guide as mentioned… Part of the removal requires the outer case of the knob enclosure snipped away with side cutters to help with removal…

You will need the following…

good soldering iron (variable temp comtrol)

desoldering plunger

desoldering wick

solder flux

Elektron when I replaced mine had the encoders and seeing it is a MKI you better order a few extra…

The key to this repair is not to use tto much heat or you will damage the traces… If you are confident soldering then you can do it if not take it to a music repair shop … No more than a $100 in labour I would imagine…

Thanks a ton for the detailed answer! I guess I’ll try sniping it if it doesn’t hit too high price and look for a repair shop to do that for me - it seems way beyond soldering DIY synth kits.

Once again, thanks for all the hints and replies guys. Helpful as always.
