The idea for this mission was born as I was thinking on how priveleged we are to live in this period of history and in peaceful parts of the world. I hope I’m correct in assuming this is true for all of us, at least to a certain degree. As a contrast, if this had been 100 years ago we’d currently be experiencing hell as the world went up in flames around us.
So, mission #3 will be to create a sonic landscape inspired by the mood or events of my favourite poem, Dulce et decorum est by Wilfred Owen.
DULCE ET DECORUM EST
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.
Gas! Gas! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime . . .
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering,choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
Pro patria mori.
The goal of this mission is to go pretentious and artsy. To explore the boundaries of what music can be using your favourite machines. No rhythmic or melodic parts required!
All music gear allowed, but the focus should be on Elektron machines. Common sense applies here. A guitar as a sound source for Octatrack mangling would be perfectly fine, but something made entirely on a modular synth and just recorded to the Octatrack would not.
Premade samples and loops are allowed, but should be clearly described or uploaded to soundcloud so that everyone can judge how they have been used in the recording. Again, common sense applies. Creative use of Elektron machines is the point of the mission, not recording some loops from a sample CD.
Other than that, anything goes.
