Model:Cycles

Still figuring this thing out, but damn. There’s so much there. So much variation is possible. It’s SO crazy to Ctrl All and just subtlely turn various knobs, it’s almost a way to build a new pattern to save to the next slot.

and then chance?! How cool is chance? I love that as a kindve blanket trig condition knob. it saves having to muck around with that unless there’s something specific you want to happen.

I just had a great time on the unit, and totally forgot to record it. it’s weird to want to call it a beast, coz it isn’t really. but it is so capable.

and I finally found PAN. haha lol, there it was hidden on the main knob. it was actually fun finding it without knowing from the manual, made me laugh

I think it’s hard not to want more. I dunno what that is, pair it with something maybe. maybe a Digitone? or a model samples?

it’s kindve nice by itself. I don’t feel precious about it. And it mainly lives on my couch.

I do think it is a toy, which I mean in a fun, positive way. It’s something to have fun with. not necessarily this thing u labour over to find the ultimate patch. U just get around and make things without any real restriction.

I have to say I am very happy with the purchase. It feels too light to be full of all the features it packs in, it really does remind me of a snes lol

happy cycling

After this brief love affair, I’ve come to my sense and won’t be using the Cycles any longer.

Looking at gear that’s appealed to me lately, I just have to come to terms with the fact that the Elektron workflow isn’t for me. The Octatrack was always the exception, not the enabler, for my Elektron drug, I realise now.

Any comments from AR users?

IMHO, no way but I tend to use my AR more for samples, mostly.

Thinking just on synthesis then possibly.

@MichaalHell I’ll try that again - it didn’t work for me the first time, but maybe it didn’t put enough effort in.
@nionmu I’ll look into filmic pro as well. Thanks!
@GovernorSilver Another one to look into. Thank you!

Come on, sell it to me. So I got the first 2nd hand M:C

Are you planning on doing any post production on the audio? I’ve never tried recording into a phone. There must be some good software out there for you want to do.
I’ve tried a couple of desktop ones to handle video and audio but I was never pleased with the audio, some of them sounded like they were adding weird compression and noise gating. I always run the audio into my daw now for a bit of mastering and familiarity.
I’m definitely no expert on video editing though!

The A4 was the first hardware sequencer/groovebox I had since an MC303 and many boxes later I’ve never looked back and engrained in the workflow now. But I’m curious what alternatives have piqued your interest?

It’s going up for sale as soon as I’m out of quarantine

None, really, in so much that I’m happy with what I got. Which is a Prophet 12 module and a Blackbox, and two fx (Chase Bliss Mood and Meris Polymoon) for additional flavour.

They’re all very different from Elektron’s stuff, and I’ve really grown attached to them, so I’m just sticking to them, I guess.

For those of you concerned that there is no parameter lock for pan and might be considering that a deal breaker…

If you own another piece of gear or DAW that sends CC (most of us do I think) here you go. Got the MC next to the DT and ready to get my p-locked pan on to scratch my stereo hi hat itch.

The way I use samples is going to change now that the percussion role is filled by the MC. More vocal manglings and background layers and one shots that aren’t economically feasible from my mono synth. Ahhh good times in quarantine.

Business before pleasure though. Must finish editing a client video before musical playtime.

This will only work on the active track though right? Or will the record into the p-locks?

Would be interesting for a performance regardless, but wouldn’t be great for studio use.

I plan to try it out when I’m finished with my editing but I plan to assign each of the 6 tracks on a different midi channel. So it should work just fine. I’ll report back if not.

Wait are you asking if we can record p-locks TO the MC? I don’t think so if that’s what you are asking.

I was using the Volca drum on midi 1-6 and omg is that a fun combo. It burns 6 midi tracks but 2 left over is plenty for my other gear and my stuff is predominately rhythm based anyways. Even the melodic content is an extension if the rhythm. (That sounds way cooler than my music actually turns out tho haha )

Cool, sounds pretty neat - that polymoon looks interesting! My mates been trying to convince me to get a deluge for a while and I’ve always fancied a Virus Ti but with little time to make music I’m reluctant to start learning complex boxes. I guess its too easy to transfer from one Elektron to another!

I don’t think each track can receive midi from a different channel.

What I’m wondering is if it will record CC automation as p-locks (like elektron does with on-board automation).

They do receive on any channel you want independent of each other.

O holy shit. Thx.

I’ve sequenced them from the OT. I don’t think it will record pan parameter locks but never tried. You can record notes tho, so I was setting up arp lines on OT an then hitting live rec on m:c an it would record the arp notes straight in :+1:

You gotta admire their consitency. It takes about a minute or so to get into a new Elektron even if you’ve never played it before, but learned of its siblings.

The Deluge is impressive in many ways, but it’s become messy. Can do so much, but don’t have the hardware interface to match all those possibilities.

wish elektron would give some estimate as to when the battery handle will be available

id like to take my cycles camping this summer…
