Moog Subharmonicon

I had set from Thonk.co.uk but those did not fit well with DFAM as the screw only damaged the top of the DFaM knobs. Plus when turning it was not even and wiggled causing some tiny scratches ofnthe DfAM surface. I ended up with local Moog service and waited 2 months for Moog to to deliver the original small knobs and they had to re-solder those again.

Is there a screw on these new ones or you just push these down? I am extra cautios but still would prefer a bit bigger ones so I am considering getting this Moog set.

You just push them down. They fit nicely and turn perfectly.

They do rub a bit as well if there is play in the knobs.

The SH is a melodic masterpiece. Great for noise, pads and glitchy rhythms too. Takes a bit of work to get away from the default boing-boing/organ thing and a LOT of taming for live use, but it can be done. Hooked mine up to a DT via midi this week and after a few teething problems (I think around the DT’s polyphonic midi trigs - it was playing notes an octave higher on the ‘note off’) it’s making sense now and melting my brain with complex 64-step polyrhythms! Switch EG off, play it as a six oscillator synth, drive the output stage hard and add some stereo reverb - sounds huge. Total game changer for me. Love it.

SubH and Digitakt is a killer combo, especially when sampling some of that glitch or some chords, then downtuning, bitcrushing, overdriving, etc etc. I was very productive with those two. Enjoy!

(And welcome to the forum!)

Work in progress here… Mix is all over the place, but you get the idea…

I had the same problem, got my DFAM in a swap with someone who had fitted the Thonk knobs - really badly - screwed deep into the shafts and destroyed them! Had to have them all replaced by my techie dude and now, finally, it’s the instrument it should have been.

Picked up the Studio 3 pack the other day and really enjoying. Gonna post about it here cuz this thread is more active than the thread about the studio 3.

The unboxing experience was phenomenal. Absolutely A+ on presentation on that front. I was missing the dust cover that was supposed to come with it but Moog promptly answered my support ticket and are sending me one, hassle free so that’s nice.

I’ve been spending most of my time with the DFAM as that’s the one I’ve lusted after the longest. Gonna try to learn one at a time (though the Mother 32 seems very basic I just need to learn the sequencer button commands). I’ve mainly been using the mother 32s utilities (mult, lfo) to enhance the DFAM.

Subharmonicon is definitely really neat but I know it’s probably the deepest or at least most esoteric so I’m taking it slow with that one but I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve heard so far.

I love the summing mixer that came with the pack, been using it mainly as a powerbank for the devices and I have their audio outs going into my TX-6 so I can do a little EQing and add some effects and that’s working out really well.

I think my future plans are to set up my A4 next to it so I can use the CV sequencer out of that and then down the road finally dip my toe into an actual eurorack modular system. I do have the Matriarch and Grandmother but I’m struggling to come up with a place to put the Studio 3 pack near them but it would definitely be ideal cuz I have the Hapax over there as well and I’d love to sequence everything from that rather than the A4.

Regardless, I’m having fun just noodling around and the DFAM definitely doesn’t disappoint. It’s very inspiring and makes me want to just twist knobs and flip switches on the fly which I usually assign automation for, even with my other Moog semi Modular’s. Moog doesn’t disappoint.

Mother is deceptively complex once you start trying to use the sequencer, with the multi trigs and accent/tie functions. The “drawback” if I would call it that, would be the. same concern about the Subharmonicon, which is the limited sequencer.

With the Mother, you can dial up and down the tempo relative to the DFAM being master clock. Try dialing it up and triggering hand sequenced arps… or going slower and using it as a base line.

The Subharmonicon is the hardest to use. The sequencer suck at first until you get the itch to try to tame it, then its sometimes the go to.

Yeah by Mother 32 being basic I meant from the synthesis standpoint. I can look at it and I know what all the knobs, switches, and patch points do. Definitely want to use a different sequencer for all of them (except maybe the Subharmonicon) just to get more steps but even the 8 step sequencer of the DFAM is a very interesting thing especially with how fast you can run it. I’m sure it’s possible but I’d love to run it as fast as possible to make it oscillate and then run that that into the Mother 32. Only question is if you can change the pitch while it’s going that fast.

This video is basically exactly what I wanted, just need to route the audio through the M32 but yeah… it’s almost like it’s an analog wave table at that point.

This video explores using an external quantizer and precision adder to add one SubH sequence to the other while staying in key. This allows you to generate longer melodies and richer harmonies.

Beautiful, thanks for posting

Thanks, killingtime. I’m loving the challenge of trying to tame the SubH!

I’m about to go in on a session.

I got the Subharmonicon on XOR mode, and Mother32 is tuned and ready with it patched to produce a faux delay.

Edit. Session done. I tell ya, it’s hard getting everything to sync up and sound nice, and if it doesn’t hit right, I feel bad starting over because of all the tweaking to get here.

So I just printed so I can go back in.

Got mine yesterday. Looks like a control panel on the Death Star. Never thought it would subdue my GAS for the Matriarch and its duo-phonic play mode. No need for a MKII either. It´s a beast! Video coming soon.

First run. Subharmonicon through Fors Romb
