MPC Thread : MPC Live - MPC X - MPC One (Part 2)

Whuch clntrollers did you use?

Does it mean you can assign wav file to an audio track on the MPC? I was trying to do so, but the only option I could find, is to record to an audio track straight from the MPC inputs. No resample option or inserting wav. Am I missing something?

Dang, always totally space out on the existence of clips on the MPC. Good call, I’ll look into that.

Thanks!

Sounds like a good idea. I wouldn’t run the latest and unpatched big update if I played live. But the same goes for Ableton or any other DAW.

I have updated to 2.11… unwise, I know, but I wanted to use probability on some drum programs and use Air Flavor on my main outs.

I also find the midi mapping process really tedious, the idea of having to do it twice is not appealing.
Ableton Live is hard to beat for mapping.

A Novation Launch Control XL, which controls my 8 Sub channels in the MPC, and an Allen and Heath K2 that controls my Master channel, 2 return/fx channels and a Touch FX plug-in.

Another annoyance I have with the MPC is that you can’t midi-map the on/off function of plugins!! That’s such a waste IMO!

I feel you there. That little unfortunate detail continues to ruin my plans.

Cheers!

Still thinking about the X? Wouldn’t have to midi map as much. Seen a bunch on the used marked after they dropped the Key 61

I have an X already… it’s too big and bulky for my live rig though. I’m using a couple of synths, the midi controllers and a Tascam Model 12 mixer. The Live 2 fitted in well on the table space I have, the X would require another table.

Ah okey, got it! Yeah it is big af…

To me the X is easily the best new-gen MPC out there. Feels the most like hardware, fast to move around menus, especially with that F-Key modifier, the touch screen becomes irrelevant apart from the few screens where it isn’t (eg FX selection etc)

Can they be set to switch on/off plugins on the master channel?

yeah agreed. it is massive though but that’s part of why I bought it. It’s honestly the only piece of gear I’ve had that truly feels like a full “Music Production Centre”. The only reason I generally float the idea of selling it is cause it’s my most expensive one and it would fund more new toys. I keep changing my mind when the opportunity arises though it’s hard to hate

Yeah, if I’m understaind the question correctly - try this: Go to the Main window and tap Audio, then select the audio track you want. You’ll have an Edt Audio icon at the bottom of the screen, next to Input Config. Tap Edit Audiio and then in the same are of the screen, tap Browse Samples. From the window that pops up you can drop any wave file that’s in memory on to the audio track at the current position of the playhead.

Basically once a sample is loaded into the memory of the MPC, you can use it just about anywhere. If you add a sample to the audio track in this way, it only uses the audio track’s memory limit once. Audio tracks have the five minute limit, but if you have a one minute sample you can add it to the track as many times as you like and it will only ever count as one minute used. So you can’t record ten minutes of audio to a track, but you can construct a ten minute audio track as long as you use less than five minutes’ worth of source material.

Hopefully that all makes sense and helps, let me know if I’m misinterpreted the question.

You’ve noticed that you can’t resample directly to an audio track - it only supports the audio inputs as sources, unless anyone knows a workaround - but this way you can resample the internal tracks to a new sample (or the looper) and then drop the resulting wave into an audio track (as long as the sample is under five minutes).

Thanks mate! That’s exactly what I was trying to do: insert wav file from sd card to an audio track. How did I not see “browse samples” option is beyond me
Your answer is more than enough, thanks again!

Anyone sync’d an OT to the MPC to use its arp and resample?

A couple of extra notes in case you come to try this and it doesn’t work…

1 - You can only browse samples that are already loaded - for some reason you can’t just load a sample from card or disk straight to a track. Maybe this is to do with memory management, and having the sample in RAM means the MPC can verify it’ll fit on the track? So anyway, you need to load your wav files to memory first, then add them to the track. You can do this just by going to the Browse screen and loading them there, no need to use a kit or clip program as an intermediary.

2 - if the Browse Samples button is greyed out and doesn’t respond, your audio track is probably in the navigation / magnifying glass mode. Switch to any other mode and it should light up and start working. Baffled me just now as I was checking a couple of details.

Yep, when in magnyfying glass mode, “browse samples” doesn’t respond. Any other navigation mode-works like a charm. Thanks a lot bro! You made my live with the MPC much easier.

While we’re on the subject, just my two cents about using audio tracks in the MPC.
I was guitarist before I get into samplers and synthesizers, so what I usually do is I lay down demo track on one or two of the MPC’s audio tracks. This demo is basically me playing whole song structure on acoustic guitar. Sometimes it is one audio track, sometimes when I do harmonies I use two tracks. This I play with metronome, so later I can replace notes/chords played on acoustic guitar, by any synthesizers, samples I want. Most of the time I then later delete acoustic guitar parts and keep audio tracks for vocals, and some other stuff (like live percussions, synthesizers, choirs etc) that is easier for me to do live in one take.
Sometimes a song can go in a completely different direction in terms of e.g. notes or sometimes samples might be little off, but that technique helps me a lot with getting things done, because I already have a structure and very basic vision from the acoustic guitar part(s). Then I can let samples or synths take whatever direction they want me to go.

Is there a way to make your own keygroups previewable? When I browse expansions like The Vault, I hear audio previews for each keygroup, which really helps. But when I browse my own keygroups, nothing is previewed. It sucks having to load each keygroups one by one to preview them.

Seems so…

Nice, thanks! Looks like I have a lot of work ahead of me.
