hey @slicetwo (and anybody thinking of trying norns) i’d be glad to help you navigate the maze while learning
honestly, if you are already a bit confused i’d strongly advise against going about things kinda randomly
@ARVE shared a great link and i’ll note something you might have missed….norns manual is hosted online
that’s the main hub for any info you might need and catalogues several other helpful links with tutorials and guides
for example, if you are looking for what’s possible, the manual page explains a few (community scripts + mods | monome/docs) and then leads to the main site where you can read about em (https://norns.community/)
going straight to the community site has a few advantages:
-
all apps can searched by tag or app creator/author ( so you can browse generative apps, sequencers, loopers, samplers, and synths that are available for norns)
-
the info is always accessible (maiden, the web editor which handles file transfer for your device, has a similar list but will only be visible if your norns is on & connected to wifi)
you might already find something you wanna try but have additional questions (for example as you noted above…is your launchpad pro mk3 compatible with norns??)
searching this thread (!) can be a great source of info regarding common questions…so whether you entered “launchpad” here or searched lines forum you would find the same answer: yes, the your launchpad will already work with norns because of an app called Midigrid
going a bit deeper ~>
the first link in the manual is a printable reference pdf (https://monome.org/docs/norns/norns-first.pdf) that literally explains and names the i/o ports, how to boot norns to turn it on (as @ARVE tried to figure out last week) , the menu system, and tells ya which app loads by default
the next page in the manual is a more in depth version of that reference with many great tips (like this mini glossary of core terms which could confuse you )
subsequent pages explain the file management system, midi configuration & settings, and several tutorials (starting with 9 step-by-step studies and examples contributed by other users)
don’t skip this stuff!
if you go through most of it in order you’ll be pretty solidly grounded
