my buddy andrew just released a new synth app for norns
(w/ knobs style demo reel )

just unbelievable some of the sounds he coaxed out of this thing!

Sat patiently on the waiting list knowing that myself and a wee Shield will be very happy together. It was the recent stream by @Calc, using launchpads in the role of grids that really opened my eyes. Incredible things happening in that domain that are easy to not be aware of.

Thank you. I did not have the time to try it yet.

Late to the party … but now I’m hyped as well.

Read a bit over at lines forums where I saw great efforts from @thetechnobear who managed to get norns working with his pisound (which I also own) and a special Push 2 (also lying around here) integration.

Pretty awesome and I guess it would save me kinda ~900€ for the norns or ~350-500€ for the norns shield (which are both sold out).

@thetechnobear have you ever tried to add a screen to the pisound over i2c? All I could find in the blokas forum was the comment that “it should / could work” but that’s it. Then there is still the problem of not having enough GPIOs left for the buttons and knobs.

Scratching my head a lot about this.

no, exactly for this reason … and also because I have my PiSounds in the blokes cases.

I basically use the PiSound if I want a headless rPI, which I connect controllers to.
and use network cable when I want to configure or (rarely) use xwindows.

for more dedicated instruments, I’ve more leaned towards (various) Bela, due to its IO.
(and Im quite excited by Daisy too, which Ive messed with a bit)

and on-topic (Norns) , Ive got a FATES (forerunner to Shield) which has a screen and its own codec.

I was asked about doing a dedicated Electra One firmware for Norns.
which I kind of considered, but frankly… I don’t really use/like Norns that much.
I dislike the Supercollider/Lua integration and some of the other Mother stuff…
and with so many other platforms to choose from these days (yay for choice!) , I just drifted away, and can’t see myself coming back … but who knows

oppps…

sorry I’m quite new to Norns, just received mine few days ago.
wondering how can I use mine with Push2?
is there an easy tutorial / scripts or some programming needed?

would have been my 2nd question to @thetechnobear since he is the developer of that integration. Haven’t found a writeup so far.

That’s pretty unfortunate that you dislike Norns and stopped using / supporting it.

Is it still possible to get hold of Fates?

Website says discontinued / sold out … only way to get a Norns in any way would be buying a shield PCB (around 10 bucks + shipping) and do the SMD part yourself (ugghh nah) or some sell it with SMD for around 100 bucks. I’d wait for the official Monome Norns Shield that are said to be in stock again … soon.

No, not at all; the designer has discontinued the Fates.

They pop up on Reverb fairly regularly. Although, the price has ticked upward quite a bit (probably in no small part due to the difficulty securing Pis at the moment). The PCB is, I believe, open source, so I bought mine from an independent builder.

It is, though the latest revision by Monome is (I think) only available from them for now. I got my Norns Shield built by an independent builder in Germany and it’s been fine, though as you say, finding a new Pi B or B+ is quite tricky now.

not really…
my integration was at what you might consider the ‘firmware’ level (Maiden), so it worked with all scripts.
this meant anyone could just use it out of the box… even non-programmers.
of course, it also supported being able to use push2 only features like colour display/rgb pads etc.

BUT the flip side of this was it need a few changes to the underlying norns software, since they do not have any support of external hardware (except midi)

so this means each norns release needs to be ‘integrated’ into my code base.
this was last done in 2019, since Ive just not used norns since then (*) and not much point me continually updating something Ive not been using

and unfortunately, since its been a while, lots of change, so its not that quick to do now…

I believe someone did do some work on getting other ‘grids’ , things like launchpad to work with norns (using scripts objects), that could probably be some how made to work with Push2 … but it would not feature any kind of display support.

(*) I probably should sell my FATES , but I quite like its form factor, so keep considering using it for some other rPI project

Hmmm… so 2nd option which was discussed over at lines was to use a Rpi with HifiBerry DAC. Do you know if that’d be easier (than using Pisound)?

Ah gosh … I already see myself buying a 800 bucks norns + shipping + tax… it’s so beautiful.
