Norns

Midigrid works with ~90% of Norns scripts I’ve used with 2x Launchpad Minis Mk3; it’s by no means perfect, but it’s a LOT cheaper than an original Grid.

takes a lot of the magic though!

I wanna have an Arc as well  so beautiful

Unfortunately those are discontinued now :frowning:

Yeah I know… what was the price? I suppose also close to 1000 bucks?

But “they” said there will maybe be a revision. I mean … what the heck … such a beauty! Why would anyone cancel that?

something expensive! I forget now; waaay too much for me.

Did you buy Fates as a PCB from an independent? Or a shield?

current stock on reverb…

wouldn’t count / buy FATES… maybe wait for a new version? But it got quiet around FATES somehow (sadly)

It’s worth noting that the Fates PCB is not open source, unlike the Shield, so any that appear with PCBs that have been reverse-engineered and fabbed by independent builders will not be supported by Denki Oto, who designed it.

Okyeron / Denki Oto has stated that he will not make a new version of Fates, unfortunately, particularly as it works with a Pi 4.

dunno, you’d have to look at what pins its (HifiBerry) using, and what pins you need for the display.

it may be better, the thing is the PiSound, is also using pins for its midi and buttons and gain control.

the think I didn’t like about the hifiberry… was its use of RCA jacks - also from memory the performance wasn’t as good as the pisound, but its been a long time since Ive used the hifiberry (mines pretty old)

the other option is just to use a usb audio interface, not quite same performance, but gives you more flexibility (e.g. > 2 inputs!) … and all the pins are free to use.

btw: id hesitate buying full fat norns now…
for its price, its been out quite a while now… and the rPI has moved on a lot since its release (CM3) … rPI4/CM4.
I’d be surprised if monome don’t release something with a bit more processing power… and perhaps also update design to how its been used.
… but thats pure speculation, based on nothing really (as i don’t follow things over at lines)

yeah that a big shame…
FATES is great, Ive a PI 4 mine in it, and its works really well.

its a pity, Okyeron didn’t consider revising design/form factor, and thinking a bit outside of Norns - as I do think there is a niche for rPI with displays/encoders in the more general market (both music diy, and other diy pi projects)

Yeah if I was going to DIY I’d go to Pusherman. Was hoping for a FATES PCB tho. Shame

indeed … I like the formfactor more of the FATES. But well … the barebone design of the shield is okay too I guess.

Found those P2.5 LED matrix pretty funny to use for the Norns … but seems like nobody tried them out … I have one of them … would be nice to try that out

oh, that looks fun… how does it interface… if there is no framebufffer support (which I suspect is unlikely) , then you’d have to change Norns (maiden) to support whatever ‘api’ it uses…
(thats not that hard, thats what I did to implement the Push2 display)

in the end they are ws2812 LEDs … let me find the post on lines…

Is there a larger screen that could replace the standard one easily enough?

Not higher res, just bigger?

oh okay… just a wild statement without confirmation

yes

Yes(ish)

I sense there is SMD soldering involved… not gonna do that

There’s definitely surface mount soldering involved (but also with the Norns Shield) - good news is it’s easier, quicker and less messy than through hole  Nowadays I hate doing through hole - it’s just horribly painful and slow !

I feel a lot more confident with through hole soldering … since I have done that successfully. SMS not so much… bought some solder paste once and a heatgun for that purpose … but never tried it because I was afraid of doing something badly wrong
