Norns

Ha! Man, the most I’ve done in SC is load Meng Qi’s script and tapped away as it pinged and rained. It was one of those “I’m sure this is great to code in but I’d need a month of work to even begin to figure it out” so you have my immense respect!

Did the cheat codes ones too, really liked them. Mostly been using compass/Otis for looping and Orgn for synth but want to dive in on CC2, having 3 separate sample sequencers that do really musically transformational stuff is quite powerful

Cheat Codes is what lured me in! I hadn’t really understood what I wanted from Norns until Dan brought CC out but as soon as I saw that I was absolutely hooked and bought one as soon as I could source one.

I’m in!

Are your knobs also a bit scratchy? Can I fix that with some DeOxit? I reall dislike that…

Scratchy audibly or just the way they feel? Mine were fine but I’m sure DeOxit will sort it. Coming from a turntablist perspective, I’m of the belief that there’s very little DeOxit can’t sort out

Only the way they feel. Is the DeOxit Fader better than the non-Fader product?

I can’t remember the difference between the various types but I’ve used the F5 stuff and always been really impressed. I think it’s effectively a 5% solution whereas F100 is 100% (so for super gunked up nastiness). The F5 says it has lubricant as well as anti-oxidisation goodness. I’m not sure what the D means - I’ve never used that one. G is for gold contacts, I think. Again, never used that one either.

Okay gonna buy that - thanks!

Hmm… I hope my shield is not broken.

Getting a lot of crackling - this is the 2nd script - do I have to live with that there are limitations? It’s happening when it’s getting a little bit crazy / faster / > 1 notes play simultaneously … or something.

Can I check what causes this? CPU not keeping up? Are you experiencing this as well?

Also red light is sending SOS or something … powersupply?

Not very helpful, I’m afraid, but I haven’t had any issues with mine.

Oh, wait - I did have odd behaviour until I got an official RPi power adapter for it. It was mostly just noisy though

Okay switching to a RPi powersupply helped :upside_down_face: crappy china USB powerhub … says 2.4A/port … no SOS anymore!

I have to say … norns would be way cooler/intuitive if they had used the Digitone pushencoders.

Yeah, I was really disappointed with how much digital noise I got from mine until I used the official RPi PSU!

Hmm… I wonder which MiDi controller I should try until my Grid is arriving.

Got Push2, Livid ohmRGB and Livid code …? Guess it’s much work to get them working with Norns. Maybe I’ll wait

Honestly, it really isn’t much work at all. You will need to modify each script, but it’s very straight forward to do

Sad there is no built-in Ohm support - would look pretty good next to the Grid. But adapting would make sense … will put in some work. Can’t be too difficult but time consuming probably.

Good luck & enjoy!

Hi! I’m about to order a Norns but want to confirm that it can play sample loops in sync with the current bpm by pitch scaling / time stretching the sample? I looked at the script “Amen” for this, would that be the right choice or are there other scripts for this purpose?

I’m interested in generative ambient MIDI and have been looking at both Norns and IOS and there is a lot that interests me. I’ve got to admit that, like a few others, I’m a little daunted by Norns and I would not consider myself to have a programmers mind by a long, long way. So, the relative simplicity of IOS kinda appeals to me - I use a Mac (Ableton + hardware synths), so it should fit right in. But I’m wondering just how similar Norns and IOS are to each other in terms of destination if not necessarily the road to that destination?

No programming needed with Norns; it effectively has ‘Apps’ and a library browser to install them, just like the App store but for free.

i’m seriously in love

definitely gonna abuse this

I don’t really know how to answer this but i feel like maybe you should go with the ios setup for ease. On mac do you ever use Terminal? What type of hardware synths do you have?

If you know how to update the firmware on your synths then norns won’t be too different. But I have no idea whether your setup will fit better with norns or ios

Go with your gut

You need to do the same amount of programming on a Norns as you do to use iOS App. Which is zero.

Sure you could take up Lua and Supercollider on Norns, and you could start developing Swift on iOS - but you don’t need to. Just use their Apps.

Think of Norns like Reaktor Player. Just use the library and forget about any need for any programming. Zero required and an amazing library.
