OctaEdit - Octatrack Software Editor and Librarian [ OSX / Windows ]

I’m not sure that would have the desired effect. It seems like almost every post Elektron made in the last year on their Facebook page was followed by a succession of comments asking about Octatrack availability or updates. Not to mention Reddit, Gearslutz, and this very forum. There has been no shortage of shaming in the last year (which is a bit sad, because in all the years prior Elektron seemed like one of the tops for updates, communication, and development).
It’s an unfortunate issue of timing as their star has risen in the last two years while their staff has not grown. My own personal suspicion is that one or two key people involved in the development of the Octatrack are no longer with Elektron, so they are at a bit of a loss for any of the nitty gritty; the recent OS updates suggest to me that they may have someone new sussing it out, but that doesn’t mean they will have the answers Rusty would need, and from his posts it seems like his interest in putting any real time into development has long since passed.
I think that instead of publicly shaming them, we’d do better to pressure them into hiring him as a consultant to help develop his product.

I have one showstopping bug… and that causes corrupt banks / projects; in exactly the same way that the Octatrack does all on its own…

Elektron would need to release a new OS post 1.25D or whatever the current version is. They could also fix some other bugs and issues whilst they are at.

Good news is I’ve already got all I need, hence why it is all fully functioning. I don’t really think there is anything that Elektron can give me at this point, that window of opportunity cloded about a year ago.

Unless they can give me time?

I’ve integrated lots of disparate systems professionally, everything from full doco to contiguous dirty data files full of a single string where the vendor doesn’t even know whats going on.

Having to figure out all the various bits and bobs, enum values etc, not that much fun, as I’m sure you know.

I did ask them that, prior to starting / making anything public, and was told no,

Trust me, if they didn’t know the answers, I would be very, very concerned. In paramount they would have made their own product obselete / lost their own code base, which obviously isn’t the case. So that leaves the obvious answer, no?

I have very limited time, especially less for chasing other things. And motivation to work around, um, scenarios, is never the most fun thing. And then there is the cost/benefit scenario.

:joy:

When do I move to Gothenburg?

I’ll just fly there on that there pig.

^ hear hear, this thread has long since become a tired excuse for pointless bitching about unrealistic/impatient expectations, somebody shoot this lame horse ffs - if they(elektron) read this, take a wild guess why those bridges are likely burned anyway - i’d sooner they made the time to improve what y’all are unhappy with than to make time to support a workaround, just be grateful they take the time to write a fobb-off, that wouldn’t happen with Roland etc, i get hacked off by sending thoughts in to a black-hole in Göteborg sometimes, but it’s a lot easier to accept it for what it is, we’re owed nothing !

I am on the fence a bit and can accept both arguments.

Since I got my OT, what, 14 months ago, I have gone through a heap of emotions. I was in awe when I first got it but generally had my doubts over the OT for the best part of a year. I came very close to selling once or twice but knew I’d regret it. Over the past 3 months without realising it I have become much more fluid and quick with all the button presses. Can iron out the “iffy” things that sometimes happen without you realising (more often than not by user error) and am thoroughly enjoying it. I think the OT, up to a point, works absolutely as intended and once familiar you can’t complain too much.

BUT (there is always a but!), I do think Elektron left themselves open to an arse kicking from time to time. The file system does blow. And sample management is counter intuitive (though perhaps not when considering the OT’s functionality). By offering users so many ways to do things via various approaches it’s almost like you have a core machine and O/S that works tremendously with one or two satelite functions that can disappoint. To remove these would have greatly diminished the final product but to polish them off could take a huge amount of time (pickups for example).

What Rusty was looking to pull together seemed an ideal solution to a particular issue that absolutely would have improved the day to day user experience of the OT but I’ve learned the hard way to work to my own OT checklist when doing songs/projects so I’m comfortable with my flow - it could have been easier though!

At some point Elektron will provide the little bit of code they where asked for.
Its a matter of when and if Rusty is still working on it then, or if he’d pass it off - whatever. They where very supportive of Void, will support this as its very good business for them to do so.
Its not a matter of right or privelage or whatever - its just they have to cough up a bit of code and that seems to be taking a long long time…
Its a really tin amount of code - it really is.
And Im pretty sure Rusty and I are the only ones that have put more than words in this thread about this - ive spent a bunch of time communicating with various Elektrons and Rusty has built it all. And youve done…
? Im telling Elektron how much you alll want this but Im the only one communicating with them.

i wasnt refering to you i - i dont know who you are?
I was saying if you want an editor maybe tell Elektron you want it. Thats all.
Settle down buddy - once again Im not speaking to anyone in particular or I would have quote them…

I just had a chance to use Rusty’s thingamajig for copying banks to other banks
(software editor > http://www.elektronauts.com/files/download/74 )

I’ve finally got my head around the octatrack enough to feel I can take it out and do a live show AND… there’s a new venue in my town where I can do it.
So I got a chance to give the editor a shot and I must say… THANK YOU RUSTY!

Great tool to have in the kit as it allowed me to copy my pattern, track, scene, recorder setups and fancy trigger/trigless trig type settings from bank 1 to all the other banks…
Just a matter of picking my different samples in each bank and now I have a uniform playing field so to speak and it just made my life a hell of a lot easier.

Even more excited to get out and play live now!!

Peace and thank you again Rusty!

Just want to chime in and say I’m using this right now to prepare a new live set. Thank you Rusty.

I would also note that earlier in the thread there is mention of the “.strd” issue… I’m having it too. You have to make a duplicate of the .work file of each bank you wish to copy over, and rename the extension .strd. The editor will then do its job.

Other than that this program works great, and is a godsend.

I didn’t have to do that… I’m on windows 7, what OS are you?

Hi Rusty, thanks for the editor. I just can’t make it work, I browse the project folder but it doesn’t load. I am using W7. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help!

Not sure… I developed it on Win7, so should all be ok.

No error messages? Nothing like that? It just does nothing?

Can you send me the project folder and I can try at my end if you want?

Of course, ill send it to the mail on the editor’s help. Let me know if it works for you. Thanks a lot!

PS: Is it mandatory to have the samples collected inside the project? I was trying with a project without samples. I guess it should load anyways, shouldn’t it?

can we buy this now?

Got it and had a quick look. Sample in Static slot 001 is Drums64, no?

Check which folder you are browsing to. You want to browse to the Parent folder where the project is located, not the Project folder.

For example:

Project Folder is: D:_Temp\Octatrack Editor\COOP_01
Parent Folder is: D:_Temp\Octatrack Editor

Designed that way so you can switch between multiple projects as you like.

Let me know if that helps, or not, as seems to be ok initially on my end.

No

Yes

No.

thanks…

Update: Beta Testers wanted.

As a public FYI, I have done a complete code rewrite and overhaul of the OSE.

I’m about to move into Beta testing stage, and therefore am looking for a couple of people to do some Beta testing for me please.

If we’ve been in touch before, please do get in touch again.

Windows only.

If you are on a Mac, and fancy like mucking around with Vine/Wine whatever the posted workaround was, do let me know, but it’s of lower importance at the moment.

There is a core piece of functionality that I want tested, so obviously having a deep understanding of the Octatrack structure will be required.

OldGearGuy?

Wait! What the F#%k happened here? Going from totally no way to Beta testing?!?
This will be interesting!
Rusty for president for putting in the effort once again!

PM sent

Thumbs up to Rusty for picking up the poject again. I have bought a OT but havent used it much (yet) this editor might change that. Specially if it makes the file handling and recalling/saving somewhat more workable when combining projects

+1
