OctaEdit - Octatrack Software Editor and Librarian [ OSX / Windows ]

Oh, it’s doable, and I can do it, I just need to polish up my code a bit though. The full version will do the sample assignments, not the lite version.

Tricky part is you have to factor in that there is approximately 8,000+ sample assignments, and the way that Elektron have structured it is not necessarily the best methodolgy, but thats just my viewpoint.

There is other ways to do it of course.

That is good to hear. I am really glad you are putting the time in on this app. Even if you stopped at the lite version it would still be awesome. Thanks all the hard work.

I haven’t had a chance to give this a go either, but at the moment have all my ‘songs’ as different projects, and it looks like this might be a solution to that mess. I need to realise how the banks/parts/projects/patterns thing works also.

Heyy! Awesome work, bustin’ this out, Rusty!

My experience with it so far is:

I downloaded it and ran it with some copies of my files and it complained about not finding the bank files.
I wanted to move bank 01 between files. The source project had no .strd file so i renamed the .work file, then it complained about no .work file, so I made one the copy of the other and then it worked!

Thanks! Can’t wait to see where you might go in the future!

Glad to hear it’s of some use.

I probably need a good solid week of coding, and enthusiasm to knock off the last 10 to 20% to get the full version user distributable / solid build out.

My Octatracks are currently boxed up and in the cupbaord for the time being though.

Hi there!
I am in the same situation as you. My only octatrack is not boxed but it is usually off power. I really can;t organise this beast.
It really messes my head. I’ve lost track of nearly all my projects apart from those that i have kept notes. Too much work and too much time spent. Really not the fun box that looked like it was gonna be.
Looking forward to your work progress.

Hello. Any news about this? I couldnt find the current version link either. Thanks for your awesome work!

me too! os x here

PM him. All of you.
i so want this but all I get are cryptic responses from any inquiries as to its progress…Im not too sure he really sees )or maybe cares?) about its potential financial success. So if you want it let him know.

Great news….
Ready here for a kickstarter, OSX !
Thank you for awesome work !

What it mean?

I’ve had a few pms, seen the software editor pop up a few times in a few threads recently, so… this is rumour control, and here are the facts:

[ul]
[li]Editor is 80% complete, is fully functional, and does what it says on the tin. There are mainly workflow, UI, and UX scenarios to deal with now. Oh, and of course Beta testing.[/li]
[li]I have not even looked at the code in the last three months, nor looked at an Octatrack for that matter.[/li]
[li]As at last build, I have one critical bug. Until it is resolved, I don’t see how I can release it to anyone in good faith. Fun part about that? It’s a crticial bug in the Octatracks Operating System (as at 1.25D)
[/li]
[li]There is a basic version available via this link in the Files section. This should allow you to copy/paste stuff between Projects. What it won’t do is the sample assignments.[/li]
[li]I’m a busy man, and currently very deep in development of another project. One that I have complete control over, enjoy doing more, is more financially viable, and I don’t have to deal with a total grey area (Octratrack OS and file structures), guess which one is more enjoyable / rewarding to work on?[/li]
[/ul]

If that does not clear up any speculation, feel free to ask questions.

To be completely clear on this subject.

Elektron have not provided a single bit of support, information or advice regarding any of the development of the Software editor.

I was prepared to sign confidently agreements, NDA’s etc, but no interest.

Even when asked basic questions, that could have saved me countless hours worth of investigation, testing and frustration, no dice.

I (and others) have approached them multiple times, as I’ve said before, they don’t give a fuck. Some of the information could have been provided extremely easily. Fuck sake, some of it is as simple as an enum / list of values, some as simple as how a value is calculated.

Don’t hold your breath, because I sure am not that they will come back with anything, and even if they did, that horse has long fucking bolted.

Rusty, cheers! Thank you for all this work you’ve done. I hope elektron recognizes finally what you’ve done

elektron should come out and explain their reluctance to provide the hex protocol.

If there is a high risk of an error bricking your OT, then fair enough, you could understand why they don’t want to endorse or help out.

But if not, then opening up this information (let alone sysex capabilities) would do wonders for users in getting much more from their machines.

Fuck all.
Thanks Rusty for all youve done

Totally totally amazing. You have a group of users pretty much demanding this - a user who has the smarts to pull it off and just needs a few key bits of data - many many PM’s have been sent and promises HAVE been made. Im going to send ANOTHER pm about this but I have a way of getting a response this time. BUt if I get through to them is there any point Rusty?

JUST to make this perfectly clear - Rusty is asking for a few bits of code - like a few lines - and would also ensure if Elektron change a line of that code then the editor woudnt be broken
nothing that would divulge any secrets to Elektrons magic sequencer (well hes reversed engineered that anyway - thats why there should be an issue)

Ive gone from not giving a shit to being pissed off at the end of writing this.

Get angry - PM them all. and if you dont - dont whinge and bitch about it if youve done nothing to progress this.

This thread should be made a “sticky”. Like a nail in the eye for Elektron.

What it means quite clear…
Ready for support the project by kickstarter, for example.
Meaning works must be paid.
Something in the clouds ?
All the best,

Sorry to hear all that, Rusty.

I’ve had similar situations in the past with other (non music) companies I’ve tried to integrate with, and I understand the frustration. Sometimes a little unofficial ‘you can’t count on it, but here’s some info’ can go a long way in good faith.

All I can guess is that Elektron are working on something that overlaps with it…

No Elektron have no competing product.

I dont use facebook but isnt that how to get companies attention nowdays by essentially publicly shaming them?

Start a facebook group and well all join… Internet activism…
