Rusty, will the application run on Windows XP?..
Also, the beta testers you spoke of are receiving the software through PM? … there is nothing in the files section yet, correct?
Thanks very much for all your efforts!

Yes.
At least one of the beta testers only has an XP machine, and one of my test environments is XP.
They get it privately.
Correct. And there won’t be.
Reminder, theres an FAQ on page one of this thread.
Yeeessss! Finally an ability to import SMF to the Octatrack.
How do you deal with the 64 pattern barrier?
Cheers and thanks.
/Mikkel
This, and other questions are still being debated / head scratched over.
The trick is writing all the various algorithms to handle various scenarios, quantisation, more then four notes, sysex data, etcetera, etcetera, users and their DAWS are never going to present the data in exactly the right format, so rules need to be applied, yet those rules should also be malleable by the end user.
For that (64 step limit) scenario, the answer is logic to handle automatic split and a split count integer; therefore you can decide how you deal with the 64 step barrier… Lets say your input equals 128 steps, do you want to only take the first 64 steps? Split at X (32/32/32/32 or 16/16/16/16/16/16/16/16) steps? Auto split every X steps? Auto spillover? (0-31 = Pattern 1, 32-63 = Pattern 2, 64-95 = Pattern 3, 96-127 = Pattern 4) … but then of course, someone will want to define all the splits, so need to think about handling that as well, but that is just a slightly differerent algorithm and I’m starting to ramble incoherently now because of, well you know, stuff and things.
At present, it can do some cool stuff, but consider it in ‘Proof of Concept’ stage at the moment… It will be done when it is done, and integrated into the rest of the program at the appropiate time.
tl,dr: Moonbeams, bunny rabbits.
Will the OT binary file format be published?
No
Wohhhaaaa! Looking forward to that.
Have you seen this

@Mikkel:
Ah, that really came across the wrong way. Hmmm, written messages fail to convery stuff sometimes.
Yes, saw that a while back, the video is from an earlier version. My apologies for my previous comment. Appreciate the link. (Only thing I don’t like is that screenshot they show on the laptop make give false expectations)
The only thing worse then being talked about, is not being talked about?
Just seen the video of your progress
Thumbs up Rusty! Alot of people incuding me are going to be very happy to be able to copy to other projects while automaticly remapping the samples
the holy grail!
And to the beta testers for suffering through the testing and tweaks.
It’s complicated, but it is there.
And then what next?

That will be a paid upgrade.
I’ll provide a bit more of a detailed answer, as I’m sure others may have similar questions.
Overview:
OctaEdit will be released in a modular format.
Each ‘Module’ represents a core part of the program, and at present there are six Modules available:
Project:
Handles all the settings related to the Project that is being edited.
Project Manager:
Handles all the copying of data between Projects (or the same Project), which allows the ability to copy anything from anywhere to anywhere.
In other words, this is the one to use for copying songs/samples etc between Sets/Projects.
Samples:
Handles the management and reorganisation of Sample Slots withing the active Project.
Also affects the current Project… what to use when you want to reorganise your samples slots (Looking at you matheusleston)
Audio Pool:
Handles the management and reorganisation of audio files withing the active Set.
Analytics:
Provides analysis of sample / slot utilisation.
Click on a slot (Samples module) or file (Audio Pool module) and it will tell you where it has been used.
Options:
Fairly straightforward I hope…
Of course that is a brief overview, and each module contains a fair bit of functionality.
There are a number of other modules currently in development / awaiting testing, and there is a lot of very cool stuff I can put in OctaEdit, however development costs need to be offset via revenue, else what is the point?
Release Date:
The pragmatic answer is “Unknown” at this point in time.
The release date is largely in the hands of the beta testers who are testing, and need to approve the core modules prior to release.
Development is primarily focused around squishing any issues that the beta testers find, and performing other development / enhancements for future use.
Intention is looking at about next Friday…
BUT… depends how many bug reports come back from testers. I am not going to release software that has critical issues that adversely affect the performance, reliability and usability of the software.
Of course, beta testers may feel that is largely unrealistic, so who knows?
Website:
Should be up at the tail end of this week, but this is not my department. Catching up with Web developer tomorrow. Until all the website stuff is done, obviosuly it will be unavailable to purchase.
Debate is still ongoing regarding initial pricing / discount / upgrades etc… but the intention is that pricing will be at a set cost, with free upgrades.
The volume and functionality of the upgrades, as per above, will be largely dependent on gross sales.
Basically:If it does what you want, get it. If not, don’t. But don’t get it on the assumption or desire that it will perfrom an unspecified piece of functionality in the future. It may, it may not, but get it if it does waht you want now.
Note:
All of the above is subject to change, so don’t take it as gospel.
a comprehensive informative update on the development of a long awaited s/w
sorta makes some company around here look rather silly.
damm i hope this sorts my mental block with the OT and its file hamdling and architecture.
(i learn it, then forget, get bored learning again, put it away, rinse and repeat)
CANT WAIT,
Might please you to learn that right now I am alpha testing new ‘Template Mode’ within the ‘Project Manager’ module… Hopefully I’ve taken the right approach with it.
