OTO Machines FX - BIM BAM BOUM

aw nice to see my local synth shop on here!
will be going to see them if I ever have Boum-money!

I recently got a BIM and I absolutely love it. Such a wonderful device.

I wish there would be more background information from the builder himself but I could only find two very old interviews and a radio show in French without captions.

I ordered Bim at the beginning of July and got Boum Monday from https://www.gear4music.com

I wasn’t planning on buying Boum so soon, but I think we all know how difficult it can be to order new (and not pay 2nd hand upsell prices)

I cancelled my Boum order from Rub A Dub as i’ve just had a very productive and fortuitous session on my Mpc X. Got reminded that i don’t need any more than i already have.

I had a few rackmount gates/compressors* sell recently, leaving more than enough $ for me to order one from Noise Kitchen (still a few in stock!)

Euro PSU, but I’ve got a BIM and BAM already so I won’t be using all 3 at once.

I do need to find the right things to use BAM with. I sold it once already and after tracking use https://valhalladsp.com/ a ton on instruments, perhaps I’m trying it too much solo and not enough in context of “in the mix”.

I may also have probably tried it too much with guitar instrument-level impedance perhaps?

*Excellent quality TBH, but I have a hard time managing patch cables so the smaller or more “instrument”-centric gear works best with my brain

For power, I’ve got all 3 running off Cioks DC7. Definitely a space saver for powering these up.

I couldn’t agree more… these are amazing quality. Full of character and I love the form factor. My only complaint is not finding a ready made stand for all 3. I’m probably going to build something from scratch or maybe order a custom build.

I have these patched into Boredbrain’s Patchulator 2. It’s definitely not an elegant setup and I’m already looking for a different space saving system without losing track of what I’m setting funds aside for next. Not an easy task.

What is your favorite use of the BAM?

Do you just need reverse polarity switching cables? Can it manage to power anything else when all 3 OTO are connected? Thanks.

I’m surprised/disappointed that nobody has come up with a stand or rackmount solution for these yet, at least not that I know of. I’m using an old wine rack but it’s hardly ideal.

Thanks!

I sawed an extra cutout into my wooden pedalboard yesterday to safely mount the BIM on my board (air vents on the bottom). Plus I bought the DC7 to power it - I really like the sound of BIM 🫣

This thing fits the three of them pretty much perfectly (and it is really nice quality):

My favorite use is not a complicated or exclusive one, but I find it so much easier with BAM on the desktop in arms reach… It’s the Freeze function for adding texture, creating reversed reverb builds-up (reversing the recorded tail after releasing freeze).
I love the thru mode for adding grit and warmth. That thru-mode was my “excuse” for buying a dedicated reverb unit because it meant it could do more.
My favorites are Types 1 & 2 (Room & Hall), but especially when using the freeze function, I’ll experiment with the other types.
I read the other date that non-linear and chorus are great on percussion, but I have to experiment more with that.

I’m able to power other devices. I also followed the same post that @Flipsos linked.

I actually forgot to use the parallel adapter for Boum, but it’s been working fine without power loss or anything. I’m going to go ahead and switch it now because I don’t want to find out I damaged the unit over time by underpowering it.

I’ll use 4 of the available 7 ports to power up the trio because Bim and Bam won’t need the parallel adapter.

It is a shame. I want a simple-looking wood stand that can hold them all safely even if I move all 3 together.

I’m hoping https://www.instagram.com/noizzihardwood/?hl=en can create something. I have stands for DT, ST, SE02, and TR08 from his shop. His Etsy shop is closed until August, but I hope to reach out when he’s back.

I’ve seen other options for custom stuff at reasonable prices (sub $100) but I rather go with what I know works well if I can.

I discovered a very elegant 4u option (plus 1u of space for cabling). Tis an adjustable depth VESA mount. I discovered that you can mount the center plate at an angle. A few rubber bumpers on the bottom lip and some Velcro strips on the back of each unit and they will remain secure. You could mount the center plate flat and have the pedals mounted vertically if you used lots of velcro.

I have a Cioks power supply mounted in the back to power all 3. Another option is to get a WiFi connected 3 port power strip like this TP Link unit - Limited-time deal: Kasa Smart Plug Power Strip KP303, Surge Protector with 3 Individually Controlled Smart Outlets and 2 USB Ports, Works with Alexa & Google Home, No Hub Required , White https://a.co/d/cSh66Vg

This mount is available on Amazon: RackSolutions Universal Rack Mount Monitor VESA Mounting Steel Bracket https://a.co/d/akbHAEr

I have mine set up on a 3D Studio Furniture stand plus a bluebox. Originally picked it up for holding drum machines/rack synths but ended up using it for efx/mixer station instead.

Because the ears seem adjustable, is it possible to leave them off completely?

I’m considering if it’s possible to use the Univeral Rack Mount (minus the rack ears) with a VESA stand or arm (with the velcro + rubber bumpers).

Yes the ears are not attached out of the box so you can leave them off.
